This is a long shot, but...
I've been reviewing Gavin De Beker's book "The Gift of Fear," so that I can discuss what I feel are some key elements. It's great to re-read it, but I can't something that I thought was there. I remember, around the time I was first reading "Gift of Fear," reading an exercise that involved visualizing (or remembering?) an event that causes fear and being aware of the kinesthetic feeling and where it is located (generally between the bellybutton and head on the centerline). This feeling then is a concrete indicator in the future of when to pay attention to danger. Has anyone heard of this and know where it came from? Thanks

I HAVE heard of this phenomenon but I don't remember the source. You've got me thinking though.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I'm thinking that it might be from a set of audio tapes I had years ago by Tony Blauer.
Anyone heard of/rememer him and S.P.E.A.R.? I probably won't be buying the tapes (CDs now) to confirm, unless this ends up being a regular thing I do. I just had people imagine what it would feel like if a big, scary looking man came up and stuck a gun in their face. I amped up the submodalities and had them focus on what they felt and where specifically they felt it; then I explained that this is one way to help differentiate between fear (an intuitive danger signal) and worry (a mental process).

Cannot remember where I heard that too.
But you cannot go wrong with Mr. Blauer's SPEAR System. One of the best out there.... "The Gift Of Fear" is a must read book for EVERYONE, imho....

Stephen K. Hayes had some visualization exercises in one of his books that involved visualizing being attacked as well.

Hayes' philosophies have been a pretty significant influence on my own. His awareness techniques are very useful.

Seadog, I found this in Googling the physiology of the premonition of danger. Page 138, item 182. Getting past the first few paragraphs and reading on, you'll find mention of the premonition of danger. While it doesn't pinpoint the area of the anatomy, it does indicate that the phenomenon exists, probably through the central nervous system and related muscular functions.

Ah, I have a fairly extensive Hayes collection.
I'm pretty sure that's not where this particular exercise that I'm thinking of came from, but I'll check. He does have a lot of good awareness exercises. It's actually funny, I re-read the Gift of Fear and over the next two days I had two very solid examples of exactly what he talks about with danger signals as well knowing something is wrong but knowing why until you analyze it after the fact. In the first incident I used some of the verbal diffusion skills from Bill Kipp's amazing video "The Missing Link." My talk was specifically on applying intuition to staying safe on the "street," which followed from a statement that I made in a talk two weeks ago that awareness, intuition and verbal diffusion skills where far more important to staying safe than being able to fight. Of course if you have to fight, you better be able to do it well, and being able to fight can often give you the confidence to talk a situation down. In regards to having to fight I think the principles I learned in the Bujinkan are helpful here, but the simple techniques like SPEAR or Peyton Quinn's "Self Defense against a sucker puncher" are probably what I would use to apply those principles. Bob1Dog, That link looks great, thank you! I'll try to give it a full read this evening.
