I was reminded in another thread that I've got this book sitting at home. This thing is a monster, lot of good content, and a lot of content that I haven't gotten through yet. Is there any "must-know" or "killer" effects that you are aware of in those first 5 years?

David Acers Cheap Labour. I don't draw stick men. I make it a 'scarey' trick and draw pac man ghosts.

David Acers Cheap Labour is fantastic. I love that effect! Pac man ghosts sounds good for this.

I act like I'm scared of the ghost. At the end I let them keep the card. I do lthis for kids. After finishing at one table I left and and while I was at the other end of the resturant this little girl comes chsing me with card in hand. She was really cute.
Are ther any other tricks in this book worth mentioning? There is a sponge ball and card trick that I think is good. I've modified it so the card can be signed. The effect is a sponge ball is pushed through a deck and finds a selected card (it the one with the little red sticker on it). I might have to pull this book out again sometime. |

Richard Osterlind has a trick in there. It involves a signed (initialed actually) torn and restored sweet and low package. I think it is called "Sweet and Low".
I've done it a few times at the restaurant and it goes over very well. Seems quite impromptu as well.
The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance; it is the illusion of knowledge.

I just learned Richard's "sweet and low" (as you've called it) at Magic in the Rockies. Its worked itself in very well to my restaurant work too. When he tipped it I said DUH!

Ray Mertz' Signed Card On the Window (Outside),
Leather Clad Stranger - Acer & Sisti, Full Contact - Acer, Sweet & Low - Osterlind - an absolute killer! Guest Check Pseudo Psychometry - Sisti - extremely clever and overlooked method, Magic Paper - Ammar (also published elsewhere), Birthday Card - Dennis Carroll But the real gold for me was in the articles, especially the regular columnists. Steve Beam's hysterical "Becoming a Professional Restaurant Magician" with the "fee calculator" still has me chuckling Ask the Only, by my pal Al, The Only - solid gold information In The Trenches - Paul Green - totaly true and useful stuff about the real world The Last Word - Chris Hurlburt At The Bar - Ray Mertz - great advice and some strong bits, too! Secret Support - Stuart Bowie only ran a few issues, but was really useful. Similar to the Howhedidits column in the Café! Straight Lines Don't Go Around Corners - Simon Lovell - madness, wierdness and fun. And Sisti's commentaries and the reviews. I am VERY sad that this publication has gone away. Are you listening, Jim? Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

I believe that Osterlind's handling of "Sweet and Low" in the book is different from his latest handling of the effect which he calls "Sweeter and Lower" and includes in volume #3 of his current 4-volume set.
