After 80 years, they are stoping the Columbus Magi-Fest for good. This a great loss to the magic community. I find this very sad.

I spoke with staff members two weeks ago, they said it was one of the best they have had. They were talking about next years events. This leads me to suspect the website was hacked...

Tony, it's sad but true. The convention is no more. I received an email from Mindy Burden last night.
Magi-Fest was always a great time and I am very sorry to see it go. |

Thanks Paul. I work for Haine's House of Cards and they received the same e-mail from Mindy.
Tony, I don't have a habit of reporting unconfirmed information. Maybe confirming yours before condemning someone else's would serve you well. |

I got the same message from Mindy. I just could not believe. I was sure it was a hack. Like I said, a few weeks ago I spoke with staff and I was told it went very well. One of the best. So email is not generally a confirming bit of evidence. If it is true, I would be very sad about this....

Yes it is true...unfortunately. It's a sign of the times...magic conventions are going to have to reinvent themselves if they want to survive. I am sure there will be additional conventions that will also follow suit.

Really sad. Lectured there this past year and it was great. I really enjoyed Magi Fest. Wish it weren't so.

I believe that it is true. I received my notification from Maria Ibanez.
The resaons given: "While we wanted to have our 82nd convention in 2013, we decided to change those plans after further reflection. We see some potential headwinds that could affect the quality and financial health of future conventions. These include: Long-time, loyal attendees who are aging out faster than younger registrants are coming in The downturn in the economy over the past few years Financial pressure on the convention due to increasing costs and insurance requirements, while keeping registration, food, and lodging costs affordable to attendees" It was a magical institution in America that will be missed. I responded to this in another post, but just to throw in my two cents ...
Very sad news. I feel privileged to have participated a few years ago, presenting 3 lectures on 3 consecutive days. Saw Arthur Trace's stage act, which was very impressive. I also had a dealer booth next to Eric Jones ... and witnessed some amazing magic being demonstrated by him! Magifest will surely be missed by many. Arthur Stead http://www.arthurstead.com |

Not a hack, directly from their website:
Dear Friends: The Columbus MAGI-FEST has had a great run of 80 years (81 conventions). And while we hoped to see the 100th, for now we’ve decided it’s time to retire the convention. This decision did not come easily; there were several factors. The Redcoats have a strong friendship—we are like a second family to each other. We’ve all watched our kids (and even some grandkids) grow up at MAGI-FEST, and we thank you for being a part of their lives and for the wonder that we and they got to experience these many years. We finished the convention in the black, able to pay all our bills and refund money to those who pre-registered for 2013. While we wanted to have our 82nd convention in 2013, we decided to change those plans after further reflection. We see some potential headwinds that could affect the quality and financial health of future conventions. These include: •Long-time, loyal attendees who are aging out faster than younger registrants are coming in •The downturn in the economy over the past few years •Financial pressure on the convention due to increasing costs and insurance requirements, while keeping registration, food, and lodging costs affordable to attendees We are all very sad to retire MAGI-FEST, but we want to do so on our terms as a quality, family-friendly convention, at an affordable price, that was fair to all who participated. We also wish to thank our wonderful staff: Tony Dolciato, Randal Fath, Mike Heniken, Steven Kline, the Krech kids, Glenn Mackie, Red Penley, and Mike Sanderson. We appreciate their tireless dedication and support more than they know. They are the ones who made it happen at “show time”. Thank you again for all your support, love, and friendship for these many years. We hope our paths will cross again in the future and that perhaps we'll see many of you at other magic-related events. With warmest regards, The Board of Directors of the Columbus Magic Club, Inc.

The economy is starting to turn around. But younger people aren't attending these things because it's expensive and why bother when you can get some much magic on the Internet. Its a shame as there are so many bennefits to hanging out and seasoning with other magicians and seeing guys perform live. I don't blame young people. They don't know any better. But it is a shame.
It seems like smaller, more intimate close up conventions are maybe the way of the future. Especially with all of the interest in Cardestry at the moment. I don't know. I love all kinds magic. I like these big conventions. But maybe they just aren't feasible anymore.

I think some of the bigger conventions could benefit, if they actually combined forces. I see conventions with two big ones in the same state and almost 2 hours from each other. If they got together and used those resources they could have a bigger crowd and might be able to make it so the rates are lower.
I agree it's almost $200 just to go to a convention, then the rooms are always almost $100 a night even with the convention rate. But just like most magicians sometimes the conventions seem to want to battle each other and are opposed to coming together.
Okay, I give up what was your card?

I feel like I have lost a great friend. This is very sad. If there is no one to take over the effort, the effort stops. This is happening in many more endeavors than magic. What have we wrought?

I attended this convention for about 25 yrs. I feel like I've lost a friend. A bunch actually. There were a lot of people who I only saw there and now won't get to see them at all. A shame.

Gotta say, this is very sad. So many friends have been made at this convention. I like Steve really enjoyed it when it was at the Hoilday Inn in Worthington. Thank you to everyone who has ever been invloved with putting this convention on, your efforts have made lasting memories for many of us.

Just my two cents here. I will miss the Magi-Fest as well. I will admit I have not attended since they moved it downtown but that was economic for me. Since I lived in Columbus it was much more costly to attend. Before this I was a "regular' and even a dealer for several years. That said, ther is, at least to me, an obvious soultion as to a way to keep the Magi-Fest. Here are my thoughts:
1. OK so attendence was off (no doubt in some respects because of the move). Why not move it to one of the hotels that the conventions was located before or at least one with easier access. 2. Downsize the convention. Cut out the big show at the theatre downdown altogether. Instead, make use of the hotel for the entire convention. So you don't have a big illusion act with a dozen illusions. Get an act with a couple illusions. Hire some of the "better cheaper acts" as Jay Marshall used to say. 3. Put the dealers back in the rooms. Yes, it is stuffy and hard to see the magic but that cuts costs 4. Don't have 20 dealers . Limit the dealers to 6-8. After all, they need to make money and if there are too many they will not want to attend and with fewer registrants there is no need for a lot of dealers This advantages are this: You will get at least a couple hundred who will attend. This is only a guess but I think that would be the case. You will cut the cost, and probably be able to cut the registration price as well. You will get magicians who will want to attend if the convention is not downtown with easy access and also they can eat at less expensive restaurants in the area. You keep a great tradition going. These are just a few of the thoughts I have . Ron |
