No, I don't like mineral water. Drank Gatorade instead.
By the way, I don't have the book in front of me but one of the effects I liked was by Ross Johnson and the other was an effect that dealt with the revelation of a thought of movie title. Don't remember the name of the effect or the contributor. But the effect was really good. Edit: This is the first post on Pg 13 - Nice!!!

Okay, I am back and settled in. As promised, here are some more thoughts on the effects in Scryer and Friends.
I will start by saying that I am an adherent to the idea that when something is introduced into a mentalism plot, it must seem organic. There needs to be a reason for it, and I prefer, once having introduced something, to get the very most mileage out of it that I can (as long as it doesn't come across as contrived). Now, I love things that fit comfortably alongside things I am already using. As there are many fun effects I can perform with coins, I will often perform mentalism with them, eventually building to the "Hide a Coin" routine which most of us are familiar with. I often perform it, as it is fairly impromptu, convincing, and simple. Once I'm done with this, I will pocket my coin and move on to something else. But one of the questions I have struggled to answer is "Why is this coin here at all?" Paul Carnazzo's "Salt" is the answer, and is now the means by which I introduce the coin. I loved Max Maven's "Positive/Negative" (the effect from which this idea stems), but the reveal here is MUCH cleaner, plus, it provides a great reason for the introduction of the coin in the first place, in a way that makes it feel incidental. I do confess that I prefer Maven's equivoque, but that in no way detracts from the piece. From here, I move into a whole coin routine, much of which has been shaped by ideas that I found in the "Psychological Subtleties" series. Another little wonder that fits happily alongside my existing routine is an easy though astonishing effect, by Doug Dyment, called "Penney's From Heaven". I know a young man who will have nightmares about this. He is a mathematics and statistics major and was kind enough to call me a stinker after performing this (he was so frustrated, he swapped his coin for mine only to find the results the same). Essentially, Dyment provides a method for predicting a series of random coin tosses. In the text, he has an imaginary coin being tossed, but since mine is already out, I perform with the actual coin. It works, works well (especially with good patter), and is repeatable. After I tire of this, I work the way through the rest of my routine, finishing with the "hidden coin". Then repeat that effect with an imaginary coin, (leaving the actual coin on the table) finding the imaginary coin and naming the imagined denomination. I then pick up my coin, and drop it into my pocket. When we finally put MY coin away, I jingle the change in my pocket and idly speculate as to how much change they have in their pocket. I write the answer on a business card, have my spectator empty their pocket and then show the amount to be correct. Here, I have a nice, solid, short set that captures attention, all revolves around the theme of coins, and therefore each effect feels natural and impromptu. None of it feels contrived, and as a result my audience is both entertained and mystified. Now, I daresay that neither of these effects are the 'Premier' effects in this book. They do, however, fit beautifully with other material that I perform, either providing subtle new insight and ideas, or innovating upon existing known methods. Earlier on in this thread, I pointed out that the contributions to this book are generally not the best innovations of each performer. While that remains true, I am beginning to better appreciate the subtle changes that have been wrought in my own routining due to the little things that flavor each chapter. I am confident when I say that what is here will probably go a long way toward making your existing routines more natural, clever, and entertaining. |

Hi Atlas,
Didn't think you would go with the coin stuff! But if already on the subject you may think of ending on a coin bend, there is one in the book. The coin bend seems like a good way to finish a series of coin effects since the coin is bent not much to do with it anymore and of course it makes for a nice souvenir for the spectator. Yours, Jonathan |
