I have a phone from work that is one of those android thingies. Since I was so dang broke the last couple years phones were not even on the radar and this is the first time I've actually seen one of these types of phones. The boss told me I can put 'apps' on it, which I believe is short for application and I saw in the booklet that there are 250,000 of these dang apps. What is an app and are there any cool ones I should know about? I would think a grocery list one would be nice, not sure at all what other options there are.

Do you like looking at the night sky? There is an app that shows where the planets, satelites, and major stars are. You hold the cell to the sky, and it gives you a sky map for where it is pointed.

My Statistics prof had an app for attendance taking that stored pictures to help him memorize peoples' names. He also used several other apps. He was obsessed with them. My phone is an ancient flip-phone with no such technology.

Critter, you are light years ahead of old-school, land-line Balducci.

Gee, thanks Destiny.
I am interested in this astronomy app if Balducci isn't kidding. How does the phone know where you are pointing it? |

The astonomy one is called "The Night Sky" by iCandi Apps. It costs a buck or two as I recall. How does it work? It knows where you are, and I guess the cell itself can determine which direction it is pointed at.
Now, I just realized that The Night Sky I have is for an Apple iPad. But there is probably an Andriod version as well. Check it out.

If you like games, 'Angry Birds' is always fun. Fun for all ages.

There is an app called Shazam (I believe there are other versions as well) that "listens" to a song and identifies it for you. It's one of the coolest things I have ever seen. If you are in a bar, or your car, or whatever, and there is a song playing that want to identify, you just hold the phone up and it listens to it, identifies the song and artist, and in some cases gives you an option to download it instantly from iTunes. It's freakishly accurate and totally cool.

And in case anyone is unaware, the Café has 3 forums dedicated to Apps. See under "Apps on the Menu":

I didn't know that Balducci! My wife would love the song one, she is always wondering what song is on the radio or a few seconds is played on a tv show.
I didn't realize an app referred to games as well. |

Not only will it identify the song but it will also find any videos of it on YouTube if they exist including really old clips like if it was performed on the Ed Sullivan show sometimes.

I'm not into APPs either and while I've seen the APPs forums, I never checked them out. I still use a flip phone and have a landline, which really makes me someone to gawk at. I simply don't have an interest in a phone that does more than I need it to do. If I want to play games, I just login to the Café!
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

There are a number of android apps I find useful on a regular basis. In no particular order:
1. There's a free app called Llama that lets you script all kinds of actions. By "script," I mean you can pre-define various conditions, and when those conditions hold true, pre-define actions to take. The main inputs to the conditions are time and location. For example, if you want to always turn your ringer off from 8 pm to 8 am, you can do that automatically. Or if you want to automatically set your ringer on low volume when you're in your house, and high volume when you're at your work, etc., you can do all that. Or if you want to turn GPS off while you're at home or at work (to avoid battery drain), you can do that too. 2. There's an app called CamScanner (I think it's also free) that's what it sounds like: a document scanner that uses your camera. This isn't the way to go for scanning large documents, but it's great for things like receipts. 3. If you ever find yourself in a place where you need to use public transit, many cities have some kind of free public transit app. You can get real time location info on busses or trains. 4. Similarly, if you find yourself in a new city and want to find out where to grab something good to eat, there's a free app called Yelp that collects reviews on restaurants (and virtually any other business) that's useful. It's not just useful for ratings, but can also do things like show you the closest place to get Chinese food, etc. 5. There's an app called Endomoto that uses GPS to tell you things you're interested in while biking. Current speed, average speed, total distance, etc. 6. A free app called Glympse lets you share your location (as determined by GPS) with people you want. If you ever had people call you wondering where you were (... and you were inclined to tell them...), this app is good for that. For example, if you're working late (or out with the guys), and your wife or girlfriend wants to know whether you're on your way home but doesn't want to bother you with a phone call, she can check in this way. 7. There's a boatload of news readers, but I use gReader. It's also free. (The "g" doesn't indicate any affiliation with Google.) You program the app with websites that you regularly read, and the reader automatically fetches articles and gets rid of them once you've read them. I use it throughout the day to fill downtime, whether it's just a few minutes waiting in line for something or taking a long train ride. And yeah, I'll say it: if you ever were inclined to take a newspaper into the john, then... this also works. 8. Last, but certainly not least, tons of free or inexpensive games. |

Just be careful.
There are a lot that have a bit of malware for info gathering/phishing. Also,if you type in a numerical code given to you by someone else, you can actually talk to them. There's a novelty. Ray.

I remember reading about an App once that teaches Wing Chun Gung-fu. It looked pretty cool.
*** Here it is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wingmaster I would almost get a smart phone just for this.

Maps will act as a GPS system for you and get you to where you want to go.
Flixster will tell you what movies are playing at what theaters near by. Weather will tell you the outlook for the next week where you're at or anywhere else in the world. Convert will convert just about anything from one unit to another including currency. And of course my personal fav. iFart will play various farts for you if you need to clear a room from "Dirty Raoul" to "Laundry Day". |
