What presentation of the invisible deck do you find gets the best reactions? I have tried both the classic prediction and the "invisible deck" routine but I have gotten better reactions from the prediction.

For me, one of the strongest presentations for the ID is by Marc Paul, I beliefe he named it "Human Pack".

Sounds interesting. Do you happen to have a link to a performance video of it?

No performance video, you find the routine on the dvd "Mind 2 Mind".

I have seen very strong reactions when presenting it as 'Spectator as mind reader'.
First phase of the routine I have the spec reverse any card and place it in the middle of the deck while my back is turned. The cards are boxed, I turn around and divine the selection (see Larry Becker's 'Out of Body'). Then the roles are reversed: The spec turns away while I apparently mix the cards, turn one over and box them (ringing in the gaffed deck in the process). Then the spec uses THEIR intuition to divine MY card. |

Paul Brook has an excellent version of ID that I recommend highly...

I use it for a “hypnotic regression” routine. Not “real” hypnosis, but some deep breathing and visualization. It might play a little slow for magicians, but for a mentalist it’s killer.
Sometimes I’ll follow this up with by apparently switching sides. I hand the spec a regular deck which has a card reversed, the same card I force from another deck. They spread the cards themselves and find the reversed card. For some reason, doing this second bit just strengthens both effects.
...what if I could read your mind?

Elliot, is that in print somewhere? What's the name of the effect?

I do it with the break through card system (BCS).
I put the ID on the table at the start of the trick... and tell them that we'll just leave this there the whole time. then I hand them a normal deck stacked using the BCS. I show them that if you cut the deck, you get a random card on the top and the bottom. I tell the spectator, "here, take these cards and give them a cut... cut them in the middle, deep cut, shallow cut, up to you"... then I say "now, you can either take the top card, the bottom card, or you can cut the pack one more time". If they cut one more time, then give them the choice of the top or the bottom card. Then I tell them to take their card, look at it, and place it in the deck the other way around, so that it's the only face down card in the pack. when they're done, I put the cards back in the pack (or I let them put the cards back in the pack if I can get a peak in). Then I use my "mental powers" to figure out their card. that's part 1. part 2, I then show them that before the trick even started, I had one card turned over face down in the ID, and it was their selected card (which appeared to be turned over before they even selected it). for the 3rd part... I use the vanishing deck gimmick. I actually had the ID in the white card case case from the start... then when they pull out the face down card from the ID, I put the ID away, but leave the white card case case on the table. but they still have the face down card from the ID in their hand... so then I pull out the gimmick s***l deck and put their card from the ID into the gimmick s***l deck... then I put it back in the white card case case... and the whole deck disappears. so you get 3 effects. two mentalism ones, and one magic effect where the deck disappears. I haven't been doing this routine for very long... but it really fools people pretty hard. they have no idea how it's done. |

I came across a video of a presentation where the magician asked one of the spectators to hold onto the deck for a second and quickly went on to ask someone to call up a friend or family member. He had the person on the phone imagine they were holding a deck of cards and turned one over. They were asked to name to card they selected and that card ended up flipped over in the deck.
I liked this presentation because it becomes very difficult to make the selection a set-up. An important thing to remember with this trick is that when performing it for a lot of people, it is crucial that the card selection is a free choice. If the audience suspects that you set up the trick with someone ahead of time, the effect is mostly useless and would be probably the lamest trick in the world. Also, having an interaction with someone who is a great distance away adds to the impossibility that is the ID. |

That might happen if your performing for people you no, but other than that you shouldn't have a problem.

Qua-Fiki uses a regular deck of playing cards (not a gimmicked ID) in his routine with his "Mesh Invisible Deck Bag" from The Wizards' Journal #23. There is a video available on his web page. Just one more way to think about if you do this effect.
