I provide this thread so we can bring books to other's attention that might not have received the hype they deserved. As a result excellent works go unread.
Most books get a few quotes, sell a handful of copies, then vanish in to obscurity. If you would like to share a title in mentalism that you think other people might benefit from, but is no longer "hot" (or never was), this is the thread. I have one in mind... RIDING THE RAINBOW by TC Tahoe is a book I think every reader will get a lot from, no matter what their style. It has plugs from Craig Browning, Neal Scryer, Scott Grossberg, and a wonderful, heartfelt introduction by Richard Webster. Tony I wrote on this in other threads...still, it doesn't seem to catch on. Tony's observations on amazon (you can buy it on amazon) reads as follows: "Like a kid in a candy store" is how I felt when I read TC Tahoe's "Riding the Rainbow." It is a delightful book on the subject of readings using color, but it goes much further than that. Going well beyond where other authors of this type of material go, TC builds from basic knowledge and expands adding additional elements that can be used, or not. He provides simple and practical frameworks for readings, performance venues, and much more. All are practical, customizable, and have been put into practice. Filled with anecdotes from a lifetime of experience in using and adapting this material in real world venues; we see the evolution, practicality, and adaptability of what TC presents. So whether it is a "Blue Monday", or you're in a "Purple Haze", pick up this book and give it a read; in no time you'll be looking at the world with "Rose Colored Glasses" and living in "Strawberry Fields". For those looking for additional ways to expand their business, "The Color of Money" isn't just green; it is a "Rainbow." They say that at end of a rainbow is a pot of gold; I say that this "rainbow" is pure gold. Tony Iacoviello It is simply the best, most practical book on the use of color in readings I have ever read. It is definitely under-hyped and I think many of you would be very happy if you got this book. Any other under-hyped books out there? Let's share... |

The Jinx, especially the 'act' supplements. Haven't seen it/them mentioned for years.

Riding the Rainbow sounds wonderful; I will look it up, it sounds like a great resource for those of us who use Enrique's invisible gemstones.
This is a brilliant idea for a thread. I'll have to go through my library when I get home and will post some books. Though off the top of my head... Imagine - Rick Maue The Busch Factor - Richard Busch |

"Riding the Rainbow" is a fine book that merits a greater readership BTW, Bev, there's a neat way to tie it/color readings into your own excellent "Post Justify," which sometimes gets overshadowed by your equally excellent works on readings. I'll PM/email you on it.
Perhaps because he's controversial, Bill Montana's works haven't been discussed a lot lately and they deserve to be. Three superlative works that every mentalist should be acquainted with: John Wells--"Readings With Spirit Cards": this one can get your creativity spinning. Hank Morfin--"The ANY ring PK Gimmick": a classic case study of what you can do with some ingenuity and spare pocket change. Damon Reinbold--"Bob Nelson's Sins & Secrets": Besides being a delightful look at Nelson's l;ife by a close associate, this is a complete course in mentalism by one who's been there, done that and paid his dues. Cheap in price, rich in content, it shopuld be on every mentalist's shelf. My two cents, although I reserve the right to toss in a few more pennies if I'm able to scrounge them up. |

I'm surprised "Gems of Mental Magic" doesn't get mentioned more.

Thank you for the posts here. Sometimes it is hard to get a thread going when there is no controversy.

I dunno, some times we can get a bit jaded can't we...what we see as hype is nothing more than people being genuinely excited... sometimes its blatant, but...well...here's my view...
you write up something of yours, you need advice on it...you send it to strangers that you respect and they help out with credits and advice...maybe they'll give you a quote...you're grateful...and if you release something else a while later - you go back to them, cos you have trust and you know you'll get feedback too... if you're lucky, you end up becoming friends with them...and then by that point - you can get accused of partaking in hype when its just a long, logical series of events that ended up in friendship and those people speaking about the "thing" in question... its a difficult line... anyway - back to under-hyped...which I think is the wrong term...lets say "overlooked"? sounds healthier... sean water's last release was very good... a lot of jack kent tillar books never get mentioned and I love them all...1 through to 3 are my faves I think... john riggs dvd - sleights for mentalists was very good too... quite a few things actually...

Bruce Bernstein's material, Kenton's theory books (e.g., Mystery by Association, Secrets of Indirection), Enriquez's Invisible Readings
Some people hear voices.. Some see invisible people.. Others have no imagination whatsoever.

I was going to same something, but I see I already have.
For me, RIDING THE RAINBOW is an amazing book. TC sent me a draft copy, but I purchased the book before I made those comments. Tony |

I don't know if Enrique's material is overlooked, but either way, his Invisible Series was a game-changer for me. His insight on mind-reading, cold reading, and the (Marseilles) Tarot has changed EVERYTHING I do and the way I look at and perform mentalism.

Kennedy's 'Thoughts across' was a largely ignored work of pure genius. Really ****ed me off as I had been working on an identical routine but hadn't got the method as good!
