I have a magnetic C/S coin where the thin metal shim disk fell out. Upon regluing it back in found that it was a little off center which caused the insert to flip over when it's thrown out. After soaking with alcohol to remove the shim again the subsequent prying bent and mis-shaped the shim disk (half dollar size.) I would like to put in a shim disk that is brand new and perfectly flat. I do not want shimming sheets that I have to cut. I'm looking for the pre-cut discs. Anyone know where I can buy 1/2 dollar size shim disks?

You might want to talk to Chuck or Barbara at Chazpro here: http://www.chazpro.com/servlet/StoreFront
Chuck makes "the Raven" and a lot of other PK items along with shim materials and m******c coins. He should have these in stock. Regards, Alan |

Thank you both, but I may have solved my problem. While checking the size of the shims in a couple of my other shimmed coins all the shims just fell out. I'll just use 1 of those for now. Seems like it's difficult to keep such a clean surface glued in place for a long period. Now I just have to find a suitable glue.

Thanks Todd, Never used that. Will consider it. I might try super glue as I don't want anything thick that will raise the insert beyond the [ making the gimmick obvious.

I am curious, what did you end up using?

I found the right type of double sided tape for my [/. Although I didn't think double sided tape would work for a magnetic C/S I tried it anyway. It worked for a couple of days, but fell apart as predicted. I also tried contact cement which added too much thickness and didn't work out well. I've been working with the [/ a lot so haven't had the chance to try another glue. I'm pretty sure I'll be trying super glue next. I hope to check out Joe Mogar's mag C/S when I go to the IMX. I will probably eventually get someone to make me a mag C/S with the degree of attraction that I need.

Ihop,
Thanks for the info. I may purchase something from them eventually, but I was looking for a shim (not magnetic). |

Hey Jumbo,
Unless you just like experimenting, you really should try calling Chuck Leach. He really should know the proper glue and I have found him very helpful in the past. Good luck |

My Peace Dollar Slippery Sam .005 Shim is covered by teflon tape which holds it perfectly without any glue being used. It works great. This is the method used by both Roy Kueppers and Jamie Schoolcraft.

I just received 4 Teflon shims (.003 inch thick acrylic backed teflon and .002 inch thick steel shim) that I bought from the new Lassen commercial site. Wow! What a resource that is. It comes pre-assembled so no fumbling with the shim or glue issues. Decent price, and the whole thing is as thin as the standard coin shim that I used to use (Same as Tony's - .005).
I hope the Mom and Pop magic shop guys see this and take advantage of what Todd is trying to do here - according to Todd's site he is "offering discounts to brick and mortar magic shops". Somebody go and tell your local brick and mortar that this is available and according to Todd these will NOT be sold on their big competitors' websites. |
