Beautiful work. Makes me itch to go and build something! The last thing I built was a table top to fit on the top of a folding tripod for quick and easy transport. Not nearly as nice as yours. Thanks for posting the pictures.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments, and thanks to those who had purchased my table in the past. Once I'm done with the oil process and the table top, I will post more pictures.....

So can you make this table out of pine or Popular and stain it? I don't care for labor intensive furniture, oiling it every day. I guess I am just old school with magic props and don't care for this new 'natural' wood look for magic. Interesting design, very modern looking.
As it is a close-up table, how tall is it? Is it for sitting down at or standing? |

This table can be made of any wood type, mind you that some woods are stronger than others....Now when it comes to labor intensive; I don't understand.....I have used one of these tables, with my standard 7 coats of tung oil.....for over 25 years.....and I have never had to oil it again. When it comes to the natural wood colors in magic, I think that it's up to the customer/magician that uses it. Personally, I think that it is a crime to stain woods of high cost (exotic woods; such as maple, cocobolo, walnut, mahogany, koa....etc..), as naturaly they possess beauty within and oil brings those colors to life.
I do appreciate your comments, but it also surprises me that you mentioned it being modern....as my intention base on the feet/legs with arch type legs to be the opposite of modern which I would of represented it by having more straight and clean lines, specialy in the legs. This particular was design for the standing magician, so in the past the table was made to custom based on the performers request. |

WOW! Don't be so defensive, I was only expressing my thoughts on my tastes for magic tables. Sorry to ruffle your feathers.
I have read about oiled furniture, and they say to apply oil often and polish. Any time I would have to do that is considered work for me. Yes, in magic the cross leg design is modern, before that it was 3 legs as 3 legs could be leveled on uneven flooring for stage work. I believe it was Abbott's that decided to make the 4 leg design. I believe your center post is very modernistic, looks wonderful and a bit magical at how it is able to be stable. Good design. Again, my tastes lean toward Birch wood as the design takes stain beautifully. Again, this is what excites me and only me. If I got a table like yours and took it to Pizza Hut to perform table to table, and got any food on it or a kid would kick it, I would have to hospitalized. I dropped my Nielsen Top Hat Cane on concrete once, and could not sleep for a week. Luckily, after a week in bed, I got the courage up to look at the cane. It was unharmed and not marred in any way. |

Again thanks for your comments......At no time was I upset (I have strong skin, specially after serving the U.S Marines for over 20 years... HA HA!!!) but I feel that it is only respectful to respond to each member that provides me with feedback...this is just my take.
But, I do apologize in advance if I upset you in any way....I was just expressing an opinion, just like we all have. This table is a product of many years of comments both negative and possitive from personal friends and members from the Café. When I responded to your feedback it was not my intention to upset you, but wanted to give you my opinion, not based on what people has told me, but more from a personal experience. This table has changed, somewhat since my first design...to include the top making it more durable....The top can now be removed if needed to be replaced..as you mentioned (stains...etc) This top has two colors which can be easily exchage by just flipping the inside. The table top is build with the strenght of dovetails making it extremely durable. Because of the design....If damaged in any way it can easily be repaired because its solid wood, specially woods that are very durable such as Maple.....That is one of the reasons I don't like working with pine as its a soft wood. The reason for the legs, is more for conveniece based on members request. A set of legs are already permanent on the post, making it easy to lay flat. The only attachments required in the other legs which slide right in, and of course the top. I hear you concerning the oil and the work involved in maintaining this based on comments you have heard. In my personal experience, I had never had to maintain my tables....and today it still has the same luster than 25 years ago. Hope this helps. But, anyway...these are just comments based on experience, and many years of waisting good wood.... Again, please let me know both negative and possitive comments, as both has helped me design a table I'm personally very proud of...and I could not have done it without members like yourself. Respectfully Richard |

Pattrick, thanks for your comment......I will definitely take a look at your mats and get back to you for a special custom set.
Ekuth, Thanks, In the past I used a solid exotic wood trim, usually koa, kokobolo or some other contrasting wood to give it a little more detail... Even though I may still use a solid trim, I have to agree with you, that a diamond pattern or some other sort of pattern makes it that more special. Richard |
