I think Paper Crane Magic had a particularly exceptional work in this area, correct me if I'm wrong.
Also.. Touch by Christopher Dee was an interesting read and a very clever idea.

John Mulholland's Book of Magic (1963) with possible reprint in 2001. Absolutely fantastic two-person mentalism effect! I used this for years.

There's codes in Otto Fischer's 'Illustrated Magic'. The verbal code is pretty complex, but there's no attribution so it's unclear where he got it from.
From a historical point of view, it's fascinating, although the language is somewhat dated e.g. 'Be so good as to describe this, please.' |

After announcing that the team is going to try something rather interesting, the receiver is blindfolded and takes a seat on stage. The sender moves into the audience. The send says NOTHING. The ONLY time the sender speaks is to affirm or deny the accuracy of the receiver. SAMPLE Dialogue: Receiver: You have something for me to discern. I believe that you're thinking of a playing card. Sender: Yes. Receiver: I'm sensing it's a red card. It is red, isn’t it? Sender: Yes. Receiver: Not only is it a red card, but it is a heart. Sender: Yes. Receiver: It's not a very high value. Perhaps a 4 or 5. Mmmmm… is it the 5 of hearts? Sender: Yes. Sender moves around the audience. Receiver: Have you got another item? Sender: Yes. Receiver: Picture the item in your mind. Just the item and nothing else. It has some sort of value. Not a lot of value but some. It's actually a form of currency, isn't it? Sender: Yes. Receiver: A form of currency, perhaps, but not highly valued. Less than a dollar, I would guess. Are you holding some sort of coin? Sender: Yes. Receiver: It's a rather odd coin, I think. fairly common at one time, but seldom used anymore. Perhaps a silver dollar… wait! Still less than a dollar. Are you holding a half-dollar coin? Sender: Yes. Just a sample of what Mullholland's routine is capable of. The ONLY time the sender speaks first might be to simply say, "We're ready." |

Blast from the past! I used Mulholland’s system (as a magician doing mental magic) back in the 70’s. It plays just as Michael describes it. I don’t have a partner at present, but I might have to go back and dust this beauty off. It takes a little memory work, but well worth the smallish effort!
...what if I could read your mind?

I've used the Mulholland system on and off since I first read his book back in the 60's. The beauty of it is that you can teach it to an assistant in a very short time.
And I should add that sometimes the sender doesn't have to say anything at all. |
