I love watching youtube to see the performances. I hate it when I see the "revealed" suggested search. Maybe we could ask youtube to stop this?

Performances are fine, reveals of routines and strong tricks (Even medium strength tricks) are bad in my opinion. People should not expose things that magicians use to make a living. However, I do believe that some simple tricks and controls ect can be revealed on youtube to help people start out in magic.

Just my 2 cents here, since I am a total beginner in magic. I think that the public in general should be reminded that it's not all about the song, but the singer. One can easily learn by ear or downloading the lyrics of our favorite songs, even getting the chords quickly from any search engine. However, it would take years and years of constant study and practice to be able to perform it as our favorite singers.
I think the same applies to magic, tricks and effects by themselves are quite powerful. But they appear small compared to the effect of a great performer. |

It's really not about the secret, the trick, the method, or the coolest new prop. It’s about YOU and how you present any effect that makes it magic.

The people revealing magic think it makes them look cool to do so. It is not just YouTube but there are many sites built just to expose. The thing that makes me laugh is that they call themselves "magicians".

The other day I was at a bar where magic is performed in Sundays and a guy was in telling me how many DVD's he buys of magic all the while having no clue how to perform them. It's almost as if he bought them just for the sake of seeing the trick revealed but he couldn't tell me one trick from another. Since the performance of the magic trick is a hallmark in its success, let's hope the know-how of a trick does not equate to knowledge of how its performed successfully. You tube has already shown that just because you can do a trick doesn't mean you can pull it off and perform it successfully! |

I made a post in a forum elsewhere where the question was asked, what damage occurs when magic is exposed? This was my response:
"What damage? It has given birth to a breed of pathetic individuals who have no regard for the art and meaning of magic. This is an individual who wallows in his smugness, entertaining only himself. An individual whose only one significant revelation to the world is, the ignorance of not caring. Finally, an individual who cannot think for himself and expects everything to be explained." If you think going on the internet and revealing how a trick is done will make you some kind of hero in the eyes of your peers, think again. There is more to magic than the instruction sheet that came with the trick. When you realize what that "more" is, explanations are no longer required, and the need to tell everyone else is absurd. Be magic.... PS Welcome to the forum
