I saw a clip of the worlds greatest magic, and was particularly intrersted when I saw McBride on it. He was bouncing cards across the stage, truly awesome, and he was flicking them off the top of the deck, at a truly amazing speed. Has anyone got any idea where these can be learnt?

I know cards as weapons teaches card scaling, but I doubt you will be able to get a book. I think in AoCM 3 he teaches scaling.

Bouncing the cards is the exact same principle as bouncing a frisbee. Getting the speed and rotation right is another tasking altogether.

I would stick to card scaling. Only a slect few like McBride can bounce cards off the floor. It is a skill and technique that is one of his personal trademarks and therefore he does not discuss the methods he uses.

terefore he does not discuss the methods he uses There isn't much to it, what you see him do is basically what he is doing. I' sure many magicians before McBride has used this idea, he isn't the first. Kevin |

Oh I am sure he is not the first to do this effect. I am only saying that, as far as I know, McBride does not show his own technique for doing this. He feels it is his own method and is not ready to explain it. he did tell me once that there is a technique to it which gives you more spin and direction. that is about as much as he was ready to reveal.
I say, just practice at it and see what works best for you.

Card Scaling can be found in a few sources. "Card as a Weapon" is out of print. The particular method McBrides uses is called the Audley Walsh Spinner. A description can be found in "Korem Without Limits" and also in one of the "Tarbell" volumes.

Theres a website online somewhere that describes various methods for card scaling, someone may be able to link you as I have lost the link.
I originally found out how to 'bounce cards' when I was standing next to a wall practising Audley Walsh Spinners and one hit off the wall and ricocheted off it. The principle is the same with the ground! Kevin |

Bouncing cards is like skipping a frisbee except that you have to skip tha card closer to yourself than with a frisbee. Back in the 70s I use to be quite the frisbee geek. Frisbees hold their rotation and tragectory much futher than a playing card can.

Cards can be thrown over 200 feet, and you can't throw a frisbee overhand

you can't throw a frisbee overhand You can't? I'll be sure to remember that next time I'm playing disc golf and need a hammer throw. I'll also remember to mention to my buddies that there are folks out there that can throw a card almost half as far as they can throw a disc. Pretty impressive, actually. |

Law, I concur. They must not make Frisbees in San Fran. I use to be able to throw a Frsibee with it upside down futher than most people could throw it normally.

I have the dvd of McBride's that describes card spinning, BUT, that's not the only factor when it comes to him launching the cards like missles (skipping them off the stage into the audience).
If you have it on tape rewatch his performance. There is something else in the equation. I have my theories but, that's all they are. O.K. I'll say it. I'm pretty sure I know how he does it I just don't know how he prepares for it so quickly Lee. BTW, I do use the method taught on the tape. As many things are, it's a knacky thing. Once you get it you've got, get it? Lee.

If you want to bounce spinning cards then here are some pointers...
When your first trying this look at launching the card straight up'ish. 12 o'clock in left/right and 1 o'clock forward at about 4 foot above your head. You need a fast spin with alot flick-back on release. Now the bounce. [in right hand format] As you look at the spinning card it rotates clockwise. Hold out your left hand keeping it flat. Now angle the left hand to the right by 45 degrees so the pinky is closest to the floor. Now, as the card comes back down, lift the left hand to it slightly and strike the card. The card will roll off the angle and keep spinning. Keep this up and you will find you can bounce them off most things as long as they have the correct angle/direction.

I have Cards as Weapons. I'll take a look and see if it has anything in there besides a statement that you can skip cards, I'll let you know. And I think I remember reading somewhere that Thurston used to skip cards in his act regularly as well as toss them out into the crowd. I haven't seen the McBride video that you are talking about so I don't realy have a point of referance for that.
