I have written a book that is the sweet story of a lad coming of age in a wonderland etc. It was edited by my pal Landmark who said he enjoyed it. What now? Is the best path self publishing or are one of you a literary agent? I think many will enjoy the book, t is kind of On The Road mwets The Happy Hooker, yes there is bass fishing in there. Any ideas?
Oh, I wrote it using my real name for the two or three who don't know it. |

I wouldn't go self-publish until I'd exhausted every other possibility.

So we should all keep our eyes peeled for a book by Leonard Kobal? Talk about a ghost writer!

Either way requires a lot of work by the author, it seems, in order to market the product. You will indeed probably need an agent to place the book in the catalogue of a commercial publisher.

Are the pages of this book colored, or do you have to color them yourself?

MagicSanta, having been down this route before, the best thing now is to start pitching for an agent. Get the Writers and Artists Yearbook (or the US version) and go through the agent listings. Identify each one that deals with the type of book you have written. Then send them the opening 10,000 words of your book, a one page biography of yourself, and a one page synopsis of the book. Give them six to eight weeks to respond. You can send it one at a time (which will take you forever) or do multiple submissions. Agents don't like multiple submissions, but will accept them. Be honest with them if you are going the multiple route.
I sent mine to thirty agents in batches of six. One agent said yes, and she now represents me. She failed to sell my novel, but she has got me three non-fiction books in the past year, so I have no complaints. If you decide to go down the self-publishing route (I did with my novel in the end) then remember this; more than 10% of fiction now sells in ebook format. This figure is growing; within the next three or four years, it could be half. And ebooks are free to publish on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Lulu, Smashwords, and other reputable sites. You can also do print on demand, so you don't have to shell out thousands and keep a stock any more. I would see self-publishing as a last resort, but at least it will not cost you anything. And some people make a real go of it. Having said all that, here is the shameless plug; my book on amazon! http://www.amazon.com/The-Gilli-Man-eboo......7&sr=8-3 Best of luck MagicSanta.

Thank you Tony. What are the non diction books? I have the kids show book and found it very good.
Hey UK and Celtic guys, I'll tell you what we American types, if I may speak for them. A book on party games you guys use for your long parties. Tony has a better than average section on them and Joll Roger had a lecture dvd w a couple good games but I'm interested in more info. |

MagicSanta, most of the non-fiction has been in the true crime genre - I am working on two books concentrating on murders in various regions of Ireland at the moment. I have also ghosted a few biographies. It keeps my brain from going stale.
If you do self-publish, let us know and hopefully people will get behind you and buy the book.
