Hello,
I am 14 at the moment, and am stuck. I have been studying magic for the past 2 years, however I have a range of magic tricks. I am not sure what kind of magic I want to perform to the public. I have always wanted to do kids shows, however I have also always wanted to entertain strangers, no matter their age. At the current time I have never performed in public, simply because I do not feel confident enough yet. I have only performed to family and friends. I have been focusing on card magic most of the time, but have recently purchased; mail bag escape, Disecto arm chopper and chain shackle escape. What do you suggest I do to get my confidence up. And when would you suggest to start performing to the public or busking. Also do you suggest for me to buy a case to keep all my magic tricks in? Such as; http://www.magicgeek.com/close-up-case-p......626.html Also what are some good magic tricks for a kids party show. I am willing to put some investment in this. Also some good tricks for busking. Regards, Beau Barbera Future Magician |

I'm 16 and was in the same situation as you (I still am, sort of. What worked for me was just to go out and do a bit of walkaround magic. If your tricks are flawless and entertaining and you want to then go for it. Also, have you performed at any family gatherings or friends parties ect? You could try that, its a good way to get used to performing in front of an audience.
But there are many members on here with much more experience than me so I expect you will get great advice from them. |

Barbs - Welcome to magic! The best advice I can give is to join a local magic club. Search on Google or go to the IBM or SAM and look for the closest club. You can't do better than interaction with other magicians. This will be far more valuable than buying tricks. You should also check out books recommended on the stickie at the top of this forum.
Good luck! Hudson |

Thank you Hudson.
I have been looking for local magic clubs for a while. There is none around me in Australia. |

Friends birthday parties, church gatherings, local talent show, that's how I started out as a kid. What city do you live in Australia? Where are you buying your magic? If locally, do they know about any clubs? You could volunteer to perform at nursing homes.
BTW, there is the IBM and SAM youth forum at the Magic Café. Probably a good place to ask questions like this and other from our young members to get their perspective. And welcome to the Magic Café

First up you seem to be buying a lot of stuff. You might want to slow down. Don’t worry we all have draws of stuff we once thought would be the next big thing for us.
I would say that the mail bag and wrist escape is a great finale with the right delivery. This could be done parlour, Stage or busking. To learn about busking talk to buskers in your area also check out Jimmy talks a lot. Kids shows if you’re going to do kids shows check out the Seriously Silly book by David Kaye and / or Sammy Smith big laughs for little people. They both have great advice and routines you can use. Your learn what you need to know from these. But just a note you can be a professionally magician with out doing kids shows. But as for starting it been said do church shows old peoples homes any thing just get out there. To make this process easy pick a few effects you can do well. My first routine that worked good for front room audience was, 1. A single rope routine, 2. Egg bag 3. 6 card repeat. It was all presented under a title of staples of modern conjuring. I learn the three tricks and the patter with it and just went a did it at every party and gathering Ii could find. It also all fits in a small box which is very helpful. As for boxes to store stuff have a look on e-bay, Photograph case and beautician case your be spoilt for chaoice. Also nice to have boxes with charter so you use them on stage A lot of what I have said as already been said but I hope I add a bit of help as well.
Enjoy your magic,

Hi Barbs!
It's wonderful that you are starting on your magic journey. (I envy you!) I would like to back up what Yellowcustard said above. I started out buying a bunch of "stuff" when I first started out - some of which I still cannot perform, and now lines the bottom of my magic drawer. If I had to do it over again, I would find a good "basic" magic book, one of the following:
Do not discount these books because they are "basic". There are real workers and magician-foolers in these books! If I had to start from the beginning, I would perform 3-5 tricks out of these books as an "apprentice" magician. There are so many tricks in these books, you should be able to find one that appeals to you, and then learn it by heart. Then find a second trick, and learn it. By the time you have 5 tricks, you have a whole routine, which will probably all fit in your pocket. One final word of advice: You always will get more for your money if you buy a good book, rather than a one-trick DVD for the same amount. Best wishes, -- Scott S.

I really wish I'd found this about a year ago, since then I have bought a whole load of 'stuff' some of which is awesome and fools people everytime, but if I had bought some of the books listed above I think I would be a much more rounded magician by now... well maybe not after a year but well on my way.

Yekrats mentioned these great books.
Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic Harry Lorayne's Magic Book Joshua Jay's Complete Course Tarbell's Course I also wish I started of more with these then a tonn of one trick gaffs. I also do prefer books to DVDs. However DVDs do help with the visaul aid of how stuff looks yet books seem more in depth. But I would like to add a few things to the list. Fooler dollar by Daryl. A great set of DVDs. Page by page the latest Pat Page book. ( its a bit like the Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic for pepole a bit more advanced) Just to add a bit more thank you
