I started with Ben Salinas's 4 Disc set Modern Coin Magic
then Michael Rubenstein's 3 volume sets Encyclopedia Of Coin Sleights and Knockout Coin Magic next I bought Eric Jones Metal, and then spent a fortune last year on every coin vid I could buy including the complete 16dvd set New York Coin Magic. a little overwhelming to say, there is a lifetime's worth of work to study here. I also love Marion Boykin's coin work, totally original, and I have been studying/practicing his coin magic for the last year now. so many paths to choose to go down... |

My recommendations:
Michael Rubinstein's 3 volume set: Encyclopedia Of Coin Sleights. It's companion, Knockout Coin Magic Also the New York Coin Magic Seminar 16-volume series. Very good resource! David Roth and Michael Ammar as well. Oh, and there is some cutting edge stuff here: http://vinnymarini.com/ebook/ http://vinnymarini.com/download/ Also check out Dan Watkins site: http://www.coinvanish.com/ You should fine plenty with the above...hope this helps! In addition to Roth's DVDs, Amar's "Money Miracles, and Dan Watkin's stuff, I recommend David Stone's "Basic Coin Magic." I've been doing coin magic for 15 years but only recently saw these. They are structured like Royal Road to Card magic-- sleight and then trick/routine(s) implementing that sleight. To my great pleasure, the routines are really good. And many rely heavily on feints, misdirection, and audience control. I LOVE that Stone's routines rely equally on these psychological aspects as much as the basic sleights.
I do NOT recommend starting with Salina's DVDs on Bobo or Knockout Coin Magic. The former's utility, IMHO, rests only in its encyclopedic nature as a partial demonstration of the stuff in Bobo. It is a generally lifeless presentation of coin magic. Many tricks on the latter, are either outdated or too quirky. As to quirkiness, for example, some of the tricks require props that are NOT germaine to the BASICS of coin magic (very specific kinds of coin purses, a felt circle, a black pill case, a golden coin, sticky tack, a double close-up pad, etc.). The DVDs are not, therefore, good STARTING points for learning coin magic. Stones DVDs, on the other hand, are lively routines that use common items like a pen, a shoe, a hankercheif or silk, etc. And if I remember correctly, all the tricks on volume one can be done stand-up... which is an important freedom when finding embarking on the journey of coin conjuring. |

What I did was first go through David Roth's first coin magic DVD (Expert coin magic made easy Vol.1, then vol 2 and 3) David Stone's DVD's, Basic Coin Magic, then I got after the techniques down in that one, Intermediate coin magic (His second DVD). From there, at the intermediate level I jumped right into Kainoa Harbottle's material, learning abuot edge grip, (I still need to re-watch my DVDs. for such a great technique I never use it much), and finger tip muscle pass (I mostly got his pamplet for that one trick. The key is for the coin to fly flat, without turning or spinning. This is more difficult but looks more magical.) After that, I picked up sick by ponta the smith. This was a big transition. Very, very difficult stuff. I'm still working on perfecting just 2 of the tricks on that DVD, after 3 years of a lot of practice. The vanish, and 3 fly. That vanish was a bear at times. a lot of times I wanted to give up. I was so tired of it not working after months of practice. But like with anything, keep with it. Keep with coin magic - keep moving forward.
After ponta's material, I picked up akira fuji's applications on the MP DVD (Produced by gin Giro magic) which gave me inspiration to create a trick myself. From that DVD I realized there was a lot of opportunites to use the MP , and started creating my own (only like 2). I highly suggest getting his DVD Just for "Grow up" coin. and his wiped clean is amazing. After that, I got Lawrens Godon Moneypulation and started practicing A.V.A. This routine is a beast! But lots of fun. along the way I realized simplicity is everything. Magic doesn't have to be so hard. Audiences are impressed more so by a simple trick with great presentation than a complicated or very difficult trick. A coin vanish, in their minds, done properly, may have the same impact a very easy way if presented properly, as another type of more difficult coin vanish. Recently I got Metal 2. I really appreciate Eric Jone's bodyloading. This is the direction I want to go with my magic. A hybrid of pick pocketing (put pocketing) and coins. I feel this is excellent for 3 reasons. First, it gets you out there. You're going to get caught - alot, and that "failure" makes you better . Also, it puts you out there. You have to perform it on people to practice. This can help build up your confidence in donig magic too. Second, it is good audience management, misdirection skills and also audience particpation which I feel is huge. The reasons I think why sponge balls work so well is because it happens to them, in THEIR HANDS. Eric Jone's bodyloadnig sequence from Metal 2 is magifniciant, because it happens to the spectators, the audience, making it much more magical. Adding a presentatino to this with a consistent well thought out theme where each action is motivated fairly, I feel would be the icing on the cake. 2 days ago I performed it for my friend. It was the first time I did the 4 first phases (except for in the pocket) without failing any of them. It was great. I really seemed to have made this 14 year old kid prety happy. He was amazed and his eyes were widened. I was so happy to brighten his day. oh yeah; almost forgot. another great site is coinvanish.com . Great info on the four coin roll down and other flourishes with coins and how to properly handle them. |
