I showed my teacher at my university a few things like King Rising, 2 card monte, professors nightmare, linking rubber band, etc about a good 10 min routine... after class he made me an offer I can not refuse. He wants me to use his class after hours to teach a magic class to our 40,000+ students here on campus (of course not all will attend...darn!) he said a good price for a 1 hour class would be $10 to $15 anything higher the students probably couldn't afford...
Anyways we already have 50 students signed up, my teacher let me use his endorsement and allow me to put up posters and flyers in and around the class. Now here's my problem... most have signed up because of the "king Rising Levitation" and David Blaine Tricks like 2 card monte, etc.... oh yeah and for surely the floating bill was huge! Now I am not selling this tricks, but I am selling my personally time and "expertise" to my fellow students, is there gonna be legal issues if say I teach them king rising? or floating bill in my 1 hour magic class? |

You should not teach them the floating bill, not for legal reasons, but simply because it is beyond the skill level for beginners. The result would simply be exposure to 49 curious spectators, with perhaps one serious student.
Stick with simple beginner's tricks, like jumping rubber band, simple card tricks, etc. If you manage to "cull" a few serious students, you could offer private lessons as a follow-up. The biggest challenge will be teaching such a large group. I've found that teaching magic becomes extremely difficult when you have over a dozen students. Good luck. |

Thanks for the advice!
I have experience with teaching a large group with martial arts, I'm to worried about that... but I like your "private classes" idea for the more serious would-be magicians |

Here are a few more ideas:
Open the class with a short performance, say 10 minutes, before teaching a trick. That will grab their attention and break the ice. To help manage a large class have them break up into smaller groups - 2 or 3 - to practice showing the trick to each other after you have taugnt it. Bring a train whistle or some similiar noise maker to signal them back. Keep the tricks simple and provide handouts if neessary. Include a few challenge type tricks - the Impossible Knot rope trick, for example, for the wise guys. Let them struggle for a while before teaching the method (or make them suffer until the next class!) If the lecture hall has video projection, throw in some video of magic acts and/or simple instruction (Mike Ammer's beginner tapes, for example). That will provide some variety and allow for better visibility for smaller sleights. You could even close the class with a video of some classic acts, teaching a little history to go along with the tricks. Alternately, close by performing one of your tricks - "karate coin" pehaps? Have fun, it will be more of a show than a class. |

Excellent tips Jim!
I really like the partner up system after teaching the tricks...good stuff!! Ok but I know Corey belongs to this forum and probably team ellusionist people too....So if I personally teach them how to do it "King Rising" in my magic class, any legal stuff there? If it is I really don't mind giving a small percentage of the $10 |

This is a no-brainer. If it is a commercial item, you should not teach them the trick. They should buy it from the source.

Yeah but his got such a bad rep and known to rip others off with his packages...
Like self foding bill (which he calls haunted folding bill) or something like that... hes good at taking an effect and adding this or that, why should I not teach my own version of that levitation (which actually was taught to me by my local IBM magic club way before king rising came out |

Are you trying to convince me that it's okay...or yourself?
Unless you have made a significant improvement or change to an existing effect on the market, it is still ripping off the originator. Just because someone else does it, that doesn't make it okay. Why get into it? There are so many other tricks that can be taught which are more appropriate for beginners anyway. Just open Tarbell to any page. Besides, why would you want to teach material that you regularly perform? |

12345: and David Blaine Tricks like 2 card monte Call it a bad rash...it won't go away. But PLEASE don't teach a new generation of magic about David Blaine's "Two Card Monte." It's not. The trick is, "Be Honest. What is it?" By Eddie Fechter. The book, "Fechter" is available through Hocus Pocus Magic Shop. If you're going to teach magic, you need to know it. My .12 cents worth. 12345: I do know this my friend, its just a marketing thing From a marketing standpoint, in an attempt to get people to the class, I see nothing wrong with it. The way to be honest with it though, is to make sure your students understand its history. Although, I agree with Jim here, there are many simpler tricks to teach a beginner group. Just some thoughts. I think it's terrific that you're getting to do this. It'll give you a bit of extra cash and that's always helpful! Good luck with it. Maybe if it goes well you'll have demand for more classes! Take care. Robert Bloor

Ya' know, if you REALLY want to do this right and make all the money you can on this, you might want to take advice, insight and real life experience from a couple a' guys who have been-there, done that on this very subject.
Honestly, for the time you will spend, and the money you could make, you would do well to research these two guys (specifically... I know there are others.) who have done all the real hard work for ya'. Each have done all the hand-outs with great design, detail, so YOU DON’T HAVE TO, and all that is left to do is put your name on it and take all the credit! (Legally... since the materials are all "Copy write FREE"!) How COOL is that!? AND... There is no need to re-invent the wheel and have to learn the HARD-WAY on this one either. Your business professor should concur. Success leaves clues ya’ know! – The single most successful people on the planet STUDY the successes of others and then DUPLICATE the success they study and achieve MAXIMUM RESULTS in the shortest amount of time possible! …or you can do it the hard way. It’s up to you. You can ADD you own style, personality and advancements to it their success taking it to a new level for yourself and others, but these guy WILL be able to offer some real, live, road-tested insights and experiences that may give you a really solid and TESTED place to start as a foundation! Doesn’t that make sense? Good Luck on your venture. Here are the links: (and NO I don’t make a dime one-way or the other! Give em' bites that they can chew with-out taken food from someone else’s mouth. Just advocating for a WIN-WIN for everyone! – That’s all! There is soooooooooo much great 'beginner' magic that is COOL and will draw the appropriate crowd you want! As a marketing side-note: If you want to draw on David Copperfield, Blane and all the other 'recognizable' name in magic you can simply do so by saying something like: ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ "MAGIC Finally EXPOSED LIVE! Learn magic's best-kept secrets that David Blaine, David Copperfield, even the Great Harry Houdini DON’T want you to know!” Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah… etc (The rest of your letter, promo, flyer - - from the perspective of the potential class student who would sign up) Then you date and time… ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Easy, No? - - Think THAT would get some attention? Give it a try!

You received quite a bit of excellent advice for the class. Here is my 2 cents! I have taught in that exact forum before, and it does greatly help to have a syllabus, with a one page lesson per class. For example, the cross cut force is simple, easy to teach, but remember, the thing to stress here is the presentation. Perhaps you could offer two different scenarios for revealing a previously forced card? I actually began with a performance of each trick I taught, to get them to remember the impact it had on them THE FIRST TIME THEY SAW IT. Get them to remember the "WOW" factor. Sometimes, for laymen, once they see the methodology, they sometimes dismiss it with being too easy. When my students first walked into the classroom, there was a large envelope hanging from a string in the center of the conference table. Everyone's curiousity was piqued, so after I took roll call, a woman walked in late. I asked her name, she told me Nancy. I told her since she was late, she had to assist with an experiment. She shuffled a deck of cards, I did the cross cut force, and when the envelope was opened, it predicted that "Nancy would choose the 5 of clubs". This was to later make the point of presentation vs. method. As a side note, I began to sweat because, to make sure the trick would work, I had the registered list of student names, and I looked for two persons with the same name. That is the name I used in the envelope prediction. This was my insurance against someone not showing up and ruining the prediction. Well, after roll call only two persons were not there...both Nancys!!!!! Well, to my relief, the woman who came late was one of them, and so I dodged a bullet and proceeded with the trick! Keep all tricks simple, with everyday objects, and maybe to those true students who are very interested in learning more, you can upsell them to a better private class.
All good luck!
I am whatever I am to you.
