I have been asked to present a talk on positive thinking and, to break up the spiel and hopefully make it entertaining, I was intending to incorporate a few items to get the audience involved, to back up the benefits of positive thinking and perhaps create some surprise.
One 'effect' I am going to use (and have presented before) is Chuck Hickok's method of teaching the audience to say the alphabet backwards. This can be fun and a stimulating mental exercise. If anyone has any suggestions of other effects/routines that might be suitable for a presentation on positive thinking, I'd be interested. Thanks in advance, Neil |

If someone is looking for a talk on positive thinking keep effects to a minimum. They want a talk on positive thinkingand are looking to be inspired. Even just one effect is probably enough. They are really asking you to provide them with material and information that they can use in their lives. Mentalists sometimes make the big mistake that because they know mental tricks they know about the mind.
Seriously you need to spend your time developing something quite different. |

Neil I do workshops on addictions, motivation, positive thinking, etc. I do a few effects to illustrate how negative thinking can be changed to positive thinking. The first one that comes to mind is using a dye tube and transforming a black silk (negative thoughts, etc.) into positive ones... white silk. I also use a block off rope effect showing how our negative patterns trap us and how we can free outselves from the negativity surrounding us (block is released from rope). Hope this helps and Good Luck with your presentation.

The rest of the talk is purely talk designed to motivate or inspire. And that is a real skill in itself totally different from being a mentalist. A talk about positive thinking is different from a mentalist show that uses positive thinking as dressing for an effect. |

Another thing when you do these kind of talks is ask them what they want out of it. What kinds of challenges do they want to solve and motivate who to do what?
Then go and get a talk to together that will help them. You will find over time that you create a talk that can easily be customized to specific groups. |

Many thanks to all who responded and for some excellent suggestions. These are much appreciated and will be following up.
I realise the subject and talk is on positive thinking and this is what I will be concentrating on. However to break up the spiel I was just wanting one or two suitably themed pieces to provide a few moments light relief and get the audience engaged and these I think I now have. Again, grateful thanks to all. Neil |
