So I was reading the post on what tricks or things you would never do for kids again. Fire, because a kid could burn himself, rope, because a kid could hang himself, Coins because a kid could swallow them, touching a kid because a kid could have had a surgery or you could accidentally molest them, etc. Which leaves a lot of stuff out And I had a funny/interesting idea.
Imagine this: A kid is brought up out of the crowd. If this is a family show the parent, ideally, is there. Sometimes the parent is gone because this is a birthday party, etc. You ask if they signed the waiver. They say no, and you ask for a parent/guardian. You hand a clipboard with a paper and pen on it to the parent. On the paper could be either a real waiver, or maybe just something saying, "I often pick up/touch the child that helps. Is this ok? Is there anything I should know? Surgery/sunburn etc?" 1. To me it is funny (i often have a similar joke in my show before fire eating, "Did everyone sign the waiver?" I look at the adults and say "the Adults are going, 'WHAT?!' and the kids goes, 'What's a waiver?' ") and 2. it tells me if everything is ok. If not, I don't do it, although I never had a problem, knock on wood... What do you think? |

Well I would be the wrong person to ask I guess as I man handle kids all the time pick them up push them around etc etc.
and they love it! I think the idea of a waiver might actually open yourself up to problems. it might get people thinking that there "could"be a problem but that's just my opinion

I think this whole can't perform this or that is Waaaaaay overdone.
If the kid is going to place a rope around their neck or shove a quarter up their nose or self immolate, just because of a magic trick, then they were destined to not make it though childhood anyway. Christ, whats gonna happen if they watch the road runner? Seriously! |

I don’t touch kids, but to further protect myself, I email a memo before the show to the person that hired me, and in the memo I state among other items that there will be a live rabbit and balloons in the show and this memo informs the person that hired me that they should contact every parent of this fact and I am not responsible for any adverse reactions to anyone attending the party

I htink if you handed it to the parent (or other responsible party) with some weird and rambling joke like: "What's a waiver? Oh, it's just a piece of paper that says I can put you in my slicer-dicer blender-o-matic and make you wash my windows and mow my lawns for a week if the trick doesn't work and I'm not responsible - which says a lot right there! - if you disappear and only your right sock is left - in which case you'd be backwards .... "
And all the time you are explaining this to the kid, the adult is looking at a piece of paper that simply says, "I often pick up/touch the child that helps. Is this ok? Is there anything I should know? Surgery/sunburn etc?" And when they sign it or just hand it back and you know everything's cool, then look at the kid and say "THat's it - your mine now! You know how to do wax on - wax off? Never mind - we'll get to that later. First .... " and go into the trick. Eh, just a thought. Ed |

whats gonna happen if they watch the road runner? The road runner always made it without getting hurt. Now if they watch the coyote... Nah, they'd probably be safe as long they don't have a charge account with ACME. |

I always thought it was going too far withy all the rules... What is left after all the rules? Maybe its because I am in MT and things are different when the kids are driving tractors at 8 years old... I guess you never know what can happen. I'd never thought of a kid having surgery and hurting him picking him up...
