Just an incredibly harrowing story of a Gulag survivor in the early 1940's Soviet Union. Went on to become a leader in the world of surgery.
Another book that is even more harrowing is the book "Tortured for Christ", by the former head of Voice of the Martyrs, Richard Wurmbrand. This takes place in Communist Romania. Incredible what people can do to each other. I think both are available in e-versions.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Hi Chessmann,
Haven't read either of those two books, which appear to be important and interesting. The finest "Gulag literature" I've read is the Kolyma Tales by Varlam Shalamov. And for a picture of the way an entire society is deformed by the existence of a Gulag, nothing better than Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman. |
