David Williamson has a "kind of" one-card matrix in his new, Magic Farm DVD. The plot is a card laid onto a handkerchief. A coin is cleanly hold UNDER the hank' and he passes through it to arrive under the card, (but onto the hank'). Is this clear?
Then, other coins are put under the hank', and they join the first coin under the card, thus penetrating the tissue. J. |

I think, for the matter of clarity, it is interesting to describe (maybe as a sticky post) the differences between names like "matrix", "assembly", covered or barehanded etc.
Also names that refer to an effect or to the very name of an effect. The matrix-name refers to a certain configuration of the props. In both Paul Harris' and David Williamson's routines that are mentioned those configurations are deliberately not made. Thus referring to them as matrix routines is muddying the waters. BTW. All routines, mentioned are great pieces of magic. I am a big fan of matrici, assemblies, and translocation-plots, therefore this plea! Who'll take the challenge?

John T. says only the Schneider routine is a matrix. Even Dave W. calls his routine, Sympathetic Coins.

I have released a killer "one coin", barehanded matrix in the latest issue of Channel One, called "The Lonely Coin." It's worth checking out!

Bob Kohler has a really good one card Matrix based off of Paul Harris' "Free Flight", called "Three Flight" on his International Magic lecture video (in PAL only). Really great HPC usage.

I have a routine called the RAYTRIX . It is a one card four coin matrix. The card and the coins may be borrowed. A few members of the Café have seen it. Some have the manuscript. I hope to realease it soon.

Laymen are fed up with the traditional Matrix, and it's already overexposed. Al Schneider came up with a great trick, but it's high time that we start reinventing. My money is on Raytrix. |

My Friend TOM WOLF, who is a member here on the Café, has sent me a video of his with a one card matrix..
It is one of the cleanest and most magical routines I have ever seen. Effect: His hands are empty and one gold coin at a time is vanished, and found under one card on the table. His hands are shown completely empty every time at the finish. The card is lifted and the four coins have re-appeared. For a kicker, Tom asks the spectator if they would like to see how it is done, with the card placed on the four coins, then he lifts the card only to find the four gold coins have now changed into a large silver coin. Tom has a video demo, I am sure he would show this to anyone who was INTERESTED. VINNY |

What laymen do you work for...I do several dozen variations of Matrix. But when it comes to working for laymen, I only do Schneiders routine. Not once has a layman ever told me he was fed-up with that version. Perhaps you are continually working for the same group...in which case any lay audience will become fed-up with it! Mike |

It's like sawing a woman in half, nobody believes that effect when they see a big bulky box on stage--its been done that way for so long that everybody either knows or suspects how its done. I remember this one time when I tried to conclude an on the spot perfrommance with the matrix. As I started to assemble the coins, one of the spectators asked if what I would be doing was "...the one where the coin jumps from one card to the other." there goes the element of surprise for the rest of those who, by some odd neural pyenomena, forgot what the set-up was for. Now compare this to the good old ACR. The effect is really old and can be recognized by almost anybody once they see it or hear it desribed. However, during performance, the spectators have no idea what is happening till the first revelation, they don't know that to expect--quite unlike the traditional matrix where most of those watching know what that "busineess" of the asssembly is all about. They get don't get surprised and they enjoy less. New handlings of this effect give it a twist which the audience do not expect, and not to mention the fact that the trick looks tougher from the audiences point of view. This keeps the magician one step ahead. |

You would be surprised ar the millions who have never seen nor heard of a "matrix" with coins or other objects.
There are tens of thousands that have never even seen close-up magic and that is what is so wonderful about our profession. There is always something new to the spectators. Tom Wolf

To my experience, most people I meet never have seen coins magically jump from hand to hand much less under cards.
I am with Tom on this one. Most people never have seen close up magic, not to mention a specific trick such as matrix. |

It's described there as "one of the oldest and best close-up coin tricks of all time." Al Goshman had a version of this using a newspaper and 4 cards but I prefer the this version due to the audible quality of the coins "arriving" when they clink together. The original version is by Hank Yoe and was in T. Nelson Downs book "The Art of Magic." |
