Prestidig,
I also was in the small but attentive audience Saturday. I didn't realize until I walked in and saw Alexander (Sandy) Marshall in the lobby that this show is co-produced by Sandy -- one more reason to support this production because Sandy is one of our own. He told me that previous shows were quite full and he was surprised at the small audience for the matinee. You're right, though, that Max handled the situation like a pro and the audience that was there got to see him up close and odds were good that you'd get brought up on stage to help. This 90-minute show, with one intermission, is in the intimate 99-seat Abington Theater Complex just a couple of city blocks from Penn Station in New York City. Here's a description of the show: http://offbroadway.broadwayworld.com/art......20120611 The show is on a limited run, only through July 1. This is a great opportunity for magicians to -- (1) support Max as a way of thanking him for his many literary and other contributions to the profession, (2) recognize and support Sandy and Susan Marshall's efforts to bring the public quality magic/mentalism, and (3) observe a real, live, full-length production of mentalism presented in front of a lay audience. This is a genuine and rare "Class is in Session" chance to see how mentalism can be presented successfully to real people. During the show that I saw on Saturday, the audience was ideally diverse with a good mix of ages (ranging from teens to people in their 70s), male and female, and all races -- and everyone had a good time. This demonstrates the wide appeal of mentalism today. The performance was a real lesson in show business as we watched Max win over the audience by the sheer power of his personality as well as some fine mental miracles... and sustain the audience's attention for an hour and a half. There are lessons as well in the effective use of costumes, lighting, set design, prop management and use of an assistant (the lovely stagehand Melanie Crispin is, in her own way, as spellbinding as Max) -- all elements of theater that magicians and mentalists must understand to make the critical leap from simply "doing tricks" to presenting a memorable, theatrical, and entertaining experience. The show is pure, inimitable Max, of course — featuring his love of card-at-any-number and other mental card tricks, his distinct treatment of the lock and key mystery, his intimidating presence and edgy audience management style complete with barbed gag lines, his playfully confrontational "I dare you to out-think me" tone, his love of Japanese culture, and his erudite references to all kinds of figures and writings in history. In this sense Max reminds us of the scariest, most entertaining college professor any of us have every met. Thank God he doesn't assign homework -- but, man, you better pay attention in class in case he calls on you! I hope everyone who can make it to NY will do so; you've got about two more weeks to get to the Big Apple and see Max Maven Thinking In Person. More incentive? His tickets are available at the half-price TKS booth at Times Square. Be sure to look for Sandy and Susan and introduce yourselves, and stick around after the show to shake hands with Max, almost smiling, in person. |

Just saw it today. I know he likes cards, I was however surprised by how much use they got.
The show is great, the great part to see is his ability to make you care about the outcome and result of everything he does. That is a huge takeaway for me. I will be applying that question to my entire act. David |

Did not see the show, but WAS at Max's lecture last night (Monday, June 25). Very entertaining evening, while only 3 effects were covered, his dissection of the subtle elements of each was very enjoyable. Some were frustrated with the quantity of questions -- many from spectators who just didn't get the explanation the first time -- or the second. This in spite of the fact that Max very clearly explained everything the first time, lol. Oh well. Felt like I was meeting a piece of real history.

I saw the lecture last night as well and am going to the show on Friday night.
I also enjoyed the lecture and, yes, the questions -- or rather amount of them -- were a bit strange. At first I didn't entirely blame people because learning tricks involving card set ups in lecture format can be tricky. That said, the questions went kind of far afield at times (like whether one effect could have an instant reset so it could be performed socially as a drinking game). Even given some of the questions, I might have enjoyed just as much a long Q and A session with Max. Some in the audience, though, definitely wanted to make sure they got their trick fix for the evening. (I think there were four effects taught, not three.) |

Saw the show last night -- highly recommended. For many of us, it's seldom we see live mentalism and even more seldom that we see it in the context of a full-length show in which it is has been integrated into a dramatic whole. My highest compliment is to say that while the individual routines were great -- particularly one involving a lock and five audience members clutching keys -- what I came away thinking about was Max's character and the various philosophical issues he explored during the evening. There are only three shows left so, if you can, check it out.
