I'm curious what type of patter people use with this effect. I was thinking of using a simple color wand/paddle move to wipe/restore the colors.
Anyone have ideas or feedback on what works the best regarding this effect and the little ones? Thanks! ChessMess |

I use it along with a magic painting. The painting needs to be coloured, so we'll use the colours off the pictures in the book. Oh no, the pictures have been rubbed out so after some fun with a bendy wand and rubber chicken, the coloured pictures are back in the book. Another wand more funny business and the colours are gone and the book is full of black and white pictures. The painting is then revealed to be coloured. That's the short version of the routine which runs for 10-12 minutes

I like to use it for educational lines. I'll just make it short:
"If you kids read your homework too fast you are not getting the full picture." (outlines) "Take your time and study your homework so everything you are reading is colorful to you." (color) "Those who do not do their homework at all, brains will be blank like this." (blank) I get tremendous applause from the adults. |

Just a curious question for you Dynamike,
Do your assistants help in your kids shows? Must keep the adult men occupied while you're doing your show. Maybe they're your kids, I'm not sure. I work with my kids a lot. Sometimes I get asked if the assistants are available. One club owner even asked me if my two young girls would be interested in doing pole dancing. Well, you can imagine what I told him...GGRRR! I really don't like this effect so I never do it.
Should I consider adding it for a kids show? It just seems so blaaaaah. I did read somewhere about a presentation for the effect that made me want to do it.... "3 Kid Monty". you get 3 kids with a coloring book each ($30 yuck) and you mix them up on stage (the kids). the adults/others have a hard time keeping their eye on the kid with the colored book. needs a kicker ending to be a worker. any ideas? Now there's a version I would consider doing.

Frank,
The disadvantage is how some kids may want to challenge you, making the performer look bad. Imagine a kid openning their book the wrong time to be curious. And Imagine a kid trying to challenge you, showing their pages saying, "Nope, this is the coloring book too, look." And the audience may wonder why isn't the magician letting a kid open any of the 3 books. I do see what you are saying, don't you think 3 Kid Monty should be used with a different prop besides the coloring book. |

Bruce Johnson (Charlie the Juggling Clown) has a great 3 BOOK monte where the books are on stands and he mixes them up.
That way he has control over the book opening.

You could use the coloring book in combo with the vanishing crayons... the colors jump from the crayon box to the coloring book... you could always do the thing in reverse-- say something about you got into magic as a child, and it came in handy, cause once you finished coloring your coloring books, you could just make the colors disappear and start all over again (this made your poor parents happy, they only had to buy 1 book)... but then as your artistic talent grew, you wanted to draw pictures other than those outlined in the book, but you needed blank paper... bam, there it is...

Baffling Bill has a nice routine for the coloring book. I bought the book and his routine from Stevens Magic about a year or so ago. Baffling Bill has modified the standard book so that you can show it with scribbling on the pages (in addition to black and white/colored/blank pages). It's really a funny routine!

Frank, here's how I solve my problem with the coloring book monte. Sure the kids will be curious if they hold the books and who wouldn't. Get the big bulldog clips and clip the top of the books so they can't peek inside. I also get the kids to hold them on top of their heads while I mix the kids up. Of course do this to silly fun music, like musical chairs. They love it. Now for the ending. I start my routine out with me also having a coloring book. Well guess who ends up with the only colored book and a wink of the eye. The kids are left with blank books. You can routine this effect up to various conclusions and it still amazes the kids as well as the audience in my show. They always ask for it in my school performances.

I tell the kids to imagine pictures in their minds, then put their finger to their head... on the count of three, THROW your pictures at the book. One... two.. three... and wham-o... pictures.
Then, to color them in, I have them take the same finger and rub it on something with color... their clothes... their friends clothes... the grass... whatever... then throw it up on the count of three... |

I use a routine similar to one that David Ginn did in the 70's. It involves two children, one that holds the book (the book is in an envelope) and the other child is the artist. Through this I have them put on different glasses (to avoid getting pink in there eye, nobody wants pink eye). The kicker at the end is a production of a mouth coil.
