Glad you'll be doing these Bill. I hope to catch both your lecture and workshop at Denny's.
I own The Thing and have really practiced the heck out of it, but have only performed it twice walkaround. I still want to develop more skills on the mime and animation aspects because I really love this effect!
Barnhardt: You have tested this theory?

Thanks Trekdad, I'll see you there.
My objective at the workshop is to take your existing skill and performance of the Thing - and improve it substantially. I know that you'll go home with some new found skills and hopefully more confidence in the performance of the effect. |

I was lucky enough to see a preview of this lecture at IMX.
It is concise, well thought out, and full of effects you will actually do! Do yourself a favor, and see this lecture! And everybody said, "AMAZING!" |

THanks TCG438 (if that is your real name!)
IMX was a great testing ground for the new lecture and it went off splendidly! THe Pack Smart concept is one I have adopted for years and have never shared or explained before. Any performer who wants to travel with less bulk yet still entertain an audience of 50-300 people will be interested in this lecture. Hope to see you there! cheers Bill Abbott |

I am very disappointed that you are driving right past the very magical Philadelphia area without even one stop. We have several hundred magicians in the metro area, five clubs, and casa DeSouza. How did we miss you?

Al,
I tried. I contacted Marc but he was already hosting back to back lectures and didn't want overload his calendar of lectures. It was really short notice for the clubs and the ones I contacted were already booked with other events. We WILL do a Penn. lecture either this year or next. Shoot me an email with any contacts you have and I'll get the ball rolling: billabbott@sympatico.ca Bill |

Was at last nights session at Baltimore and have to tell you for me IT SUCKED! He did maybe 5 to 10 min talk on the history of pack flat play anywhere. Then performed a 45 min show then dealer demo time for the rest of the night. I went for...
"How to develop your own Pack Smart Play Anywhere Show to take with you on your next flight, throw into the glove box of your car or perform at your next paid function and how to turn your existing close up act into playing big for the audience," and didn't heard it. He was asked about the lecure notes being for sale and they were only sold with the package of tricks that he was selling. I had asked him after the lecture if he was going to make available notes without the tricks he said No. This lecture for me was not worth the price of admission, let alone the cost of gas and my time to see it. Who knows maybe he'll read this and before his next lecture he'll change it from a show and sell to an actual lecture. |

Wow. And I mean this with all sincerity gman...I don't feel that you and I were at the same event last night! We had an awesome turn out and the response was overwhelmingly positive. At least to my face. You really should have told me outright last night about your feelings and I could/would have addressed them to the best of my abilities -rather than going home and typing a rant that I can do nothing with.
I take your critique and suggestions of changing the lecture from a 'show and sell' to a lecture very seriously and will examine my offering to the community - but did you miss the first half of the lecture where I went into minute detail into the evolution and development or that Pack Smart Play Anywhere concept and how that theory changed my performing career? And where I explained the criteria needed of an effect or routine to fit the Pack Smart Play Anywhere mindset? The "show" was the demonstration and an elaboration of all of these things - maybe I should have made the allusions to the theory and ideas at the beginning of the show with the show more clear. They were to the dozens of performers and attendees who came to me after the show saying that they loved the concept and were excited about developing their own Pack Smart show. When you say that it was a "45 minute show and a dealer dem the rest of the night" - I realize you're upset and that troubles me - but a dealer demonstration contains no explanations and is merely a performing of effects for sale purposes. So as the lecture was a whopping 2.5-3 hours in length - that would constitute an incredible amount of performing with no explanation. The only effect(s) that weren't explained or examined with the Thing - as I'm doing a intensive workshop today at 2 pm on it and was ASKED by an attendee to perform it after the lecture portion was completed. The other effect was "A Woman's Mind" routine from the lecture and that was due to lack of time. Those that know me and have attended my lectures know that there is no hard sell and to be honest - I usually forget to even inform anyone of what I have for sale during the lecture!! I had to cut short the explanation portion due to Ran Shine having to cut out early for a gig and he asked how much everything was so he could purchase stuff. The Pack Smart concept is for pros, semi-pros and serious amateurs that desire to construct a bulletproof, travel-proof and intelligent performance routines for modern adult audiences. I presented, in show form and in a 2.5-3 hour lecture I rarely consider sales as a barometer of how well the lecture was received - but I sold out of EVERY ONE of the Pack Smart packages I brought. Which means I have none for the Tannen's lecture on Tuesday night this week. And that's fine because it IS a lecture with ground-breaking ideas honed in PROFESSIONAL, PAID PERFORMANCES OVER THE PAST 12 YEARS. I hope they grasp the concepts, because for the serious performer in attendance- it could change their lives. Why didn't you speak to me last night about this? I was there until well after midnight and was chatting with anyone and everyone -including yourself, I'm quite sure. Now I'm typing this with anger, frustration and in complete disagreement with what you're expressing. Bill Abbott |

I've seen this lecture and I thought it was terrific. Sage advice that was gleaned from a lot of experience. For ME, it was well worth the money. Mileages vary. Apparently.

I attended the lecture in Baltimore on Friday night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It did not come across to me as a "show and sell." Bill performed a 45 min show within the 3 hour event and then provided not only the hows, but the whys and whens for each effect. I felt I learned something in an enjoyable atmosphere. I drove down from the Philadelphia area and to ME, it was worth the price of admission....and the cost of gas!

Steve,
Glad you enjoyed it I too drove from central PA to MD. Having done lectures before myself I know for a fact if I didn't do everything that was said in the course description I would not have been asked back. So, for me I expect when someone states they are going to show a, b, c, and d to actually show a, b, c and d not a,b d. And Bill I did come up and talked with you and wanted to know about the criteria of picking the tricks to put into a show like that which in the opening statement he said he would do and also and this is from one of the bullet points above "How to develop your own Pack Smart Play Anywhere Show to take with you on your next flight, throw into the glove box of your car or perform at your next paid function." Only to get "Oh it is in my notes but I didn't have time to get to them. And then moved on to someone else. I was well to quote a movie "weighed and measured...and left wanting!" As far as the show it was ok. I liked a few of them and thought Bill was a good performer but, if you are going to advertise theory and then don't have the time to do it because one or two people wanted to see more tricks then maybe you should advertise it as a show in the bag lecture and not I'll show you how to take an existing close up act and make it play big or I will show you how to develop your own show like mine. Just a suggestion. Like I said earlier Steve, glad you enjoyed it...hey to each his own. I am sure Bill will have success with the lecture selling his ready made show, but it won't be from me (not that he cares). George |
