I'm building a fermentation chiller, and it's about time for me to put together the electronics. Basically, it's a DC adapter running through a thermostat that acts as a switch. When it gets too warm, the switch closes, turning the fan on, which cycles cold air (chilled by frozen water jugs) through the main chamber to cool things down.
Simple, right? Except the 12v 1000mA power adapter I salvaged from an old Linksys router actually puts out around 16.8v and my fan only handles ~11-13v. Just doing my homework before I do any soldering (or even build a test circuit.) Assuming my calculations with Ohm's Law are correct, will the following explode or burn out the fan? And are resistors rated at 1/2 watts enough to handle this? (I have no clue how much amperage the fan draws; RadioShack is not forthcoming with that info online, I think it's listed at ~240mA on the box.)

The router probably regulated the voltage to the required level. Try the fan with the adapter as-is and see what happens. The fan might be enough of a load to drop the voltage to a useable level. Regardless, I don't think you will burn out the fan.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Cool, thanks. I'm hesitant to constantly put too much voltage through the fan, because even if it doesn't burn out, it might reduce the life expectancy, and it'll be a pain to replace it now that it's glued in place. Guess I'll pull out the breadboard, wire things up, and check the voltage before I solder it together. Anyway, I'll need to recalculate the resistance on the LED if I remove the resistors before the switch. Fun times
