This is one of my favourite moves so Im very happy to be able to see another magician doing this. For my taste the presentation was a little bit longish, hence less dynamic. I don't mean to speed up but I will tell you what looks suspicious, that during the entire routine your moves are very very slow, which is also reinforced by a lot of talking, and then during the move BAM ;-) Another thing I've noticed that you don't drop coins one after another, so you could just do the trick with 2 silver and 1 copper ;-) hehe THe move itself was very good, although to my taste it could be suspicious that you keep a closed fist even during the toss. Anyway, Im not an expert but I make an effort to try comparing how you do the trick with my mental image of how it should look. I hope that at least at some degree my points are valid. I would be grateful if someone more experienced could either support or debunk what I've written so I can learn. ;-)

The original and Vernon/Ganson writeups offer some hints on how to get more out of the trick.

It can be a nice move when used well, I think for example Tim Feher here does it very well indeed but many rush it or speed it up to bring it across or to just get by it during an effect and it is noticeable, sorta like a jump cut in an old black & white film. It doesn't necessarily destroy the overall film but you do certainly notice it. Also, I will say that more often than not, laymen will probably not give any over-attention to it and in that regard the overall effect will come through just the same. It is up to the performer to keep smoothing it out to be more comfortable with the move until the move is indistinguishable from the greater motions, aka to where there is no jump cut moment to jar you even a little bit. Still, I think it was a good effort. Keep working with it.

MB, you're so right. It seems everybody speeds up the HPC move---compared to what it would look like if done naturally---even Slydini (who popularized it)! The few exceptions I've seen are Gallo, Roth, Rubinstein and, I thought best, Latta. I think magicians do the move in a quirky way because they prepare for it mentally before the move. You can almost always see it coming. It's a move that naturally makes one nervous. What helped me with the HPC move was slapping the coins on the other coins instead of tossing them on the other coins. I saw Latta do this in a routine and I believe Rubinstein taught the move this way. (Not sure). The move looks very good this way, more natural, and easier to perform, IMO.

I agree with your comments, Tom. Especially Geoff Latta and Mike Gallo: Both execute the Han Ping Chien to perfection IMO.
Thanks! Jim PS - Especially Geoff Latta's HPC that he does "in the air". Unbelievable! |

Thank you guys for your comments !
Yes, I noticed later that I toss the coins with a closed fist. That's a bit suspicious, true. Well, actually a HPC never looks like another one ! |
