DW, I have to say that your advice was going through my head before the show. Thank you! It really helped to remember to have fun.
And it went great! It was not only my first children's show, but my first show period. I think I almost look like I know what I'm doing in the video. I'm uploading it to my computer and will post a link later. I might have forgotten a line or two, and I did mess up a trick but was able to pass it off and no one even knew I messed up! I really learned a lot today. It was great. The best part was after the show the kids were telling me I was funny and hugging my legs and asking me to come outside and play with them. I got a great compliment. The director of the school asked me how long I've been doing this Umm... about an hour?

So it turns out the director of the school was really impressed with the show and wants to hire me back for a family night that they have. And several of the parents were asking my friend about the magician their children were telling them about and getting my business cards.
Here's a link to the show. It's 44 minutes. I uploaded it in its entirety so people could critique the whole thing including flow. Let me know what you think. http://youtu.be/oOiEqnzSSZw

Well, I watch the 1st few seconds. I will only say, you looked good, but with no mike, could not hear you.
Rule number one - never turn you back on your audience. Work on "Prop Management", you should not have to open a self opening cloths hamper, and then bend over and look for something. Look at arranging your props and material in an easy to reach manner. You can do that with an assistant or placing the items in, or on a table for the purpose of use. Looking or trying to find stuff is a time killer and you will lose your audience. This is what rehearsal is used for, to smooth out the act and keep it moving. Use this video to see where you can improve and then take action and make adjustments. Only you know where you want stuff and in what order they will be in. |

At first I didn't know what you meant. I was bending over to turn the music on. All my props were nicely arranged and right where I needed them. Thanks for the advice

I am very happy to hear all went well. I am getting back into the idea of performing again, and have been quite nervous about the thought of the first few shows. Good to know you did well, and the video was good. Gives me confidence too!

Wow. Well, I watched about a minute and I see you pull a "rabbit" handkerchief out of a "hat" handkerchief. Don't you think that's kind of cerebral? It would take the average toddler minutes to realize that 'rabbits come out of hats' and that would be focused thought.
I think that your "20th century silks" is solid, not least because your presentation. However, there seems to be a lot of clutter on your table at once. This is distracting. Perhaps one suggestion I could make would be to have a props table and a separate presentation table. The reason this comes to mind is that at this moment I can see another yellow thing on the table. The children clearly understand the empty box, but their eyes are going to go to color. One yellow handkerchief, two purple, not one yellow handkerchief, two purple and a bunch of other stuff. Aaaaand, I'm done. I can't watch people behave that way in front of kids. The over animated dance is just awkward, but it would work for adults. I wonder, why are you dancing like that? Kids are so easy to entertain. You come in dressed in a suit and they'll automatically pay attention. There are various bits of business, sure, comedy bits and whatnot. Suggestion: Pick up Eric Sharp's Specialised Children's Entertainment book. If I had the energy, I would be a children's entertainer. You have my suggestions. ~Nick |
