There are a variety of séances, you may want took look at Have Séance Will Travel for a totally different idea on seances.
Not theatrical (in the sense of the stage séance format that most are familiar with) and no fraud. There are other types of séance that are totally devoid of fraud, I cannot say there is no theater as all dealings with others involves theater. I'm hesitant to list sources, or debate beliefs. I am associated with several Spiritualist organizations and have friends who are mediums. Tony |

Tony I do not debate others beliefs unless the person wishes to push their beliefs on me. You live in an area where many have interesting beliefs. My idea is similar to Eugene Burgers small shows where the mind takes the guest place but to get ideas that may add to the theater of the whole experience. If som one present thinks grandma visited from beyond the grave that is on them. One last thing...you book is still my favorite.

For the sake of the conversation, I know it doesn't fit with what you are looking for, but I mentioned "real" means different things to me based on the context; "Have séance will travel" is an example of something that I consider 'really real.'
That is, it is wonderful for a group and it is also something that I believe to be real for myself. I mix HSWT with Stuart Cumberland's seance (which was itself inspired by HSWT) in my seance.

Hume Nisbet, Scottish-Australian author and artist , (8 August 1849 - 4 June 1923) opens his work entitled The Demon Spell with the following sentence.
“It was about the time when spiritualism was all the craze in England, and no party was reckoned complete without a spirit-rapping seance being included amongst the other entertainments.” During the rest of this rather short work for that time period he would recount his experiences of that evenings events that reads like a nightmare that happened during a dream sate. The above statements of Mr. Nisbet are of profound importance for a couple of reasons. However, one reason in particular should stand out from the rest and that is, the séance was a form of entertainment. A good form of entrainment at that due to the fact it was the medium whom would be the headliner of the evenings events and would also be the one who would signify the parties close after the séance was over. |

It is true. One medium raps, all have to, one gets ectoplasm the others produce it. The key is, of course, to set the audience up to have their own unique experience. The might "hear voices" oe see shadows. You gotta love it.

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is no in a spiritualism seance although these things do often occur there is no stead fast rule therein. Sometimes nothing at all happens. On occasion this style can have even more power. However, when I say nothing I am speaking from a point of view as a worker and not the spectator. Spectators will generally perceive a multitude of things that never happened. Hope that helps.

I understand that aspect. The seance itself does take place in the mind of participants. What I am looking at is best described as a character seance designed to reproduce what one would expect in the late 1800s. The steak is in the darrk, everything else is the sizzle.
Spritualism as a belief system and that perspective is fine but again I do not buy into it beyond the presentation. As I said if one wants to believe that invisable fairies appear in their room each night then good for them just don't bother trying to convert me toit. |

That was one of the reasons Eugene went with the title Spirit Theater to get away from the "new age" or religion based connotations.
there are also distinctions of mediums (ones that produce ectoplasm , etc..) are considered physical mediums when we did our show in Salem,Ma a hot bed of unique religious and spiritual philosophies we used the term theatrical seance (as I don't really care about telling them where their auntie Boo hid the jewelry), in Salem they still do "authentic" seances which if we set aside some of the dogma like tarot readings they are another form of counseling (mostly for people that don't want to go to regular counseling) but if the medium/reader is sincere and does have their best interest in mind then so be it

Very cool Gothmeister, love New England. Tarot and allnthat can be be used as a counciling tool. It is the people who want to skin the sheep rather than shear them that is a problem. Salem just by name, not location as we know, is a wonderful set up for a ghost show. I am hoping a ghost town will also be. Dayton is the gateway to Virginia City which has a big ghost rep.

Come on Magicsanta, earlier you said you wanted to work the ghost town avenue by using an old hotel as a possible location. So the way I see it you only have the historical angle to work from and therein would be the key persona for not you but the ghost or ghosts whom your attempting communication with. When doing a séance its not about your persona as much as it is about the persona of the ghost who you will be contacting in this style of haunt.
Now there may be some options to choose from specialty when working an old hotel such as the one you mentioned, Gunslingers, outlaws, gamblers, brothel workers and even the undertaker or other notable could be used as grounds for your back story. The first thing I would look for is books about the area that should be found at the county historical society. Also check newspapers and other sources these will be on micro fish at the main library or at the local university library. Here is where you will find a story that deals with your ghost background. It may, in fact be a small article of only a few lines but that should be enough to begin the tale of dark deeds and add the justification based in a historical account. It could also drive traffic from visitors to this old hotel and help with the tourism trade. Here let me spell that out for you, that’s your best way to get the gig at the old hotel. By propagation of tourism. In simple terms, if its good for the venue it should be good for you as well. Now most ghost towns have historical accounts as far as that goes there is also a reason that these places become abandoned just as there is a reason that they sprung up in the first place. All ghost towns have dark undertones and secrets find that and you will have the foundations for something that is based in some sort of reality. That's also a better place to start then piling through magic books looking for yet another magical secret that in the world of the séance would be useless without the context of a back story based in a historical account. And for the record, yes, I make people believe they see fairies and wrote an effect on that subject. Its good stuff if your working in that environment. Really fairies are no different than making someone believe they saw a ghost. Except that fairies may be easier to create at times. Here is the last tip I am going to share on this, approach the séance from a scientific prospective. This way you will never get asked to talk to auntie boo form the attendees. It is like Godzilla said you have to do your homework to understand what that means. Wait I give you one more, Look at the history of the Pony Express which I think may have had some siginfance to Dayton, NV. Your ghost cold have worked for this and stopped at the hotel or the bar that would have been found inside for a rest. According to the records for the area there was a man who would make regular stops to that area perhaps after he died he still stops by running the same route he did all those years ago. If your lucky matbe you can catch a glimpse of him while at the hotel. Now if your going to read a magic book on seance look at Jim Magus works, he really does know a few things and is among the best thinkers when it comes to un-gaffed seance work today. |

Many of the things that are thought of that would have been "natural" in that setting also will lead you to tell their story, for example the bible of the preacher, a bullet, some coffin nails, the sheriffs star , even the sign in book for the hotel (talk about a selling point, if you create a book with "the hotels" name in it and say they found it in the cellar, room keys, pieces of "timber"

First I am Leonard Kobal, I do not know this magic santa (keep in character you know).
I am familiar with the reason the town came to be, why it became a major town in that period, and why it stopped expanding. That isn't an issue. The hotel is empty by the way, there is a saloon that has a room as well. The pony express was in this area, a station stood not a quarter mile away. I will have to invent a dark history which isn't a problem for me. As a historian I like to research all I can and truly appreciate the insight and information. |

Mr. Lab. On that photo of Dayton you no doubt saw the only difference betweeen thn and now is asphalt. The second bldg on the right with the fancier facade is the Union Hotel. On the left if you turn between the two visable bldgs you'll be 20 feet from where gold was discovered and where a drunk Comstock, who the lode was named after , was tossed from a horse and killed. He was also burried right there until his body was moved to the cemetary just behind where the photographer stood. The trees in the distance are the Carson River camps and where Piute chief Winnamucca died.

Okay Leonard, so now that we know you know some of the history that can be drawn from tell me something that is not wide spread knowledge? Like why Dayton was built on Piute lands would be a good start and why were certain parts of this town built upon scared burial grounds. This town could have sprung up a tenth mile or less away like many of the other gold proudcing towns and there would have been no bad blood between this cheif, his peoples and as he put it the white brothers. Parts of Carson City was also built upon these special lands. Which is not to far from this Dayton area. If I am not mistaken the church was built upon burial grounds so were a couple of the other buildings.
There is the hidden back story and an interesting one at that. Tie that in with what you already know about the land and travel to the old camp site and have a look around on the ground something should pop out at you. This object could be used as a focus object for the seance. Now as far as character thing goes either your a character or your not. There is no developing one, refining ones image and making a few tweaks sure but developing one from scratch never works that well because it will be to different from you you really are to be belied by any audience. |

I'm with ya. The area history is kind of boring compared to Virginia City, might have to hijack theirs. To let you know it was established cuz pine nuts grew there and it was called China Town. A surveyor laid out the town free if they named it after him. First gold in Nevada discovered there and %ayton had the ore crusher. Unfortunately not a ghost story to be found...until I get done with the place.
