Dear Fellow Magi:
Does anyone know where could one purchase a set of Chinese Cups and Balls, i.e. the Immortal Sowing Beans? Thank you |

Nobody has answered yet, so let me take a shot. It's unlikely that centuries ago, Chinese magicians went to their local magic shop asking for this. From what I gather online, they were most likely simple rice bowls or something similar. Quantities varied from two to five or more. The routine seemed to be similar to Benson Bowl in regards to handling.
I doubt that you'll find any sets marketed this way. I'd just go shopping for bowls and see how it goes.

There is only one company in China that sells the complete set.
It sells for $450: http://www.52magic.com/index.php?gOo=goo......uctname= Paul Brown is the only Westerner performing this, and in the Mandarin language. His performance is high art to say the least. In my opinion Paul is more skilled and extremely more entertaining doing this than any Chinese magician I have seen so far. Here is Paul Brown performing "The Immortal Sowing Beans": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4adgzp1CHrA |

Interesting video.....looks like a Benson Bowl routine using two bowls instead of the usual one.

I have a set. Total cost is zero. I just use two rice bowls, balls from an old cups & balls set, and one chopstick.

Where can you find the standard routine? Wasn't it published in book form - in English - some years back?

Hi Bri:
No, I didn't forget that but the one book that was cited by Normb on that thread turned out to be inaccessible (in English anyway). There seem to be lots of videos but no published written routines in Englsish. Im sure they must be out there somewhere. Thanks Sean |

Hmmm, wish I could help more. I've not seen Todd here in a while, I wonder if there's anything in his list (if it's been updated since 2010)...?

Get my book "BOWLING WITH THE STARS"
It has the Rezvani routine and other ideas, plus the original Benson routine and Johnny Thompson's.

If there is an Oriental Grocery near to you, they may have what you seek, for far less than you would pay at a magic dealer.
The one in Oklahoma City has bowls made of china and of plastic that looks like china, in several different patterns. The plastic looks good enough that I nearly gave my brother a heart attack when I tossed a thin bowl to him! The larger stores may also have metal bowls as well. Take your C&B balls with you when you shop. The ones with a foot will be easier to handle. I use a china bowl for the vanishing stack of coins as shown in Mark Wilson's video of magic in China < a great video! >. The gimmick is easy to make from brass, and is nice and quiet if lined with foam tape! They also carry the Chinese lunch box that consists of stackable metal bowls that lock down securely in a mason jar-like rack. Perfect for transporting the Sands of the Desert! I have been using one for years! I simply replaced the plastic handle with a wooden one. Shops such as these are excellent for finding magical apparatus. My Vase from the Rope and Vase is cobalt china that came came from an import shop! The more money you save, the more you have to spend! |
