I have three appearing bird cages. One from Owen and the other two are Harakhan cages. It's been quite some time I haven't used them. Does anyone here use them and how do you produce them? Body load, assistant method, table steal or through a cover?

I produce my cage as the finale to my act. I use a large stage size square circle to produce silks. While I'm showing the prop to be empty, my wife (assistant) walks onto the stage with the cage held at her side. As I produce the silks, I toss them to her one at a time. During the routine, she just adds the cage to the silks and hands them all back to me at the end. I produce the cage, put it on a hanger, hand her the silks, walk forward and take a bow. Nothing fancy but seems to go over well.

Love that production method! Mr. Electric produces his trademark chandelier as a finale using same.

Dave,
I do something similar, as magicians we think that we should do all the dirty work, productions and steals. Personally my assistant puts all the invisible harnesses, loads my jacket and loads her dress with loads too. During our act she produces 2 doves herself along with either items. A lot of magicians look down on me for teaching my assistant magic. I have showed her complicated sleight of hand, card manipulation, dove productions and my whole act. It does wonders for my act and it flows so much better. So my advice is, if you have an assistant use her wisely and don’t worry about her stealing the spotlight. It is still your act. G0THIKE |

Not a problem with me. My wife does part of the act too. She does more than just take the birds off stage or bring out the props. She actually does a few routines as well. Gives me a break and is a change for the audience.

I produce my two cages at the end of my routine also...as a kicker after my "final bow" just to shoot em' up a little more. I don't put birds in mine though I put Iquanas in them. It freaks people out because they don't see it coming because they think the act is over.

I steal mine from the back of my table as I am putting my tophat down. I do card manips into my hat then turn it over and a silk comes out. My cage is wrapped in the same color silk as the one from my hat for a little more cover. My problem was always where to put it when I am done producing it because I don't use an assitant. From my cage production I go into double doves. I use a latex dove. Any ideas on what to do with the cage if it isn't a finisher.

Why don't you put a live dove in the cage? I've spoken with Harakan personally a few times now and I know that the cages are safe for a dove --if used correctly. Everybody just started putting latex doves in them after they saw Jason Byrne...most also went right out and bought a cage after seeing Jason Byrne as well. It looks a lot cooler to put a live dove inside, I think-but what do I know, its just a personal prefrence. Since you do have a dummy dove in the cage you can't leave it out, otherwise I would have said to have a stand made for it and keep putting like one or two more doves in it so it serves a purpose. -Just a thought...

My production is at the end of the routine but I still put the cage down to take a final bow. In my case, the top of the table is no longer needed since the act is over I just put the cage on top of it.
I also use a real dove inside. There is plenty of room inside and it looks so much better if the dove is moving around inside.

I don't use production cages but have always marvelled over them. I first saw Blackstone Jr. produce them during his "Enchanged Garden" routine. Approximately a year ago, Blackstone's wife auctioned off most of the show's wardrobe. Among the auctioned items were the two original cages he used during that segment of the show.
Joseph produces a couple of monstrous cages during his act. Just can't get enough of that production! |

What are anyone's thoughts on producing a empty cage and sitting it on a table then putting a dove in it after a production??

I've seen it done in contests a few times by different people. In my opinion it looks kind of weak.

I agree. If you're going to produce a bird cage, why not have a bird in it. It adds so much more to the effect. The appearance of the cage is a surprise but having a live bird inside just heightens the effect.
