Hi guys, it's been absolutely ages since I was last dining in the Café and I come here with a very sore head. I seriously should stop thinking about this trick so much, or maybe cut back on the coffee!
I was hoping some of you could help me out... A while back my fiance and I saw a magic show where - at one stage - the performer discussed psychic phenomena. He randomly selected a volunteer out of the audience to be part of his demonstration. I can tell you now she was not a plant. He invited her on stage and presented the volunteer with a contract. It was placed on a lectern facing the audience. She was instructed to read it multiple times and sign it when she understood the role involved. As she did this he addressed the audience informing them about his own childhood experiences with psychics. After that the magician performed the trick beautifully incorporating spirit bells and devils glass, revealing the participants family name; grandfathers name, occupation, places she'd visited as a child etc. The routine slightly reminded me of DB's 'reminiscence' except no cards were used and nobody was in a trance. Now the head frying bit. I know for a fact the routine involved i*****t s******g. That's the only way something like that can work. Nothing could be taken from an impression device either, because all the lady done was read the contract and sign it. I'd imagine details were presented on that paperwork somehow, possibly detailing a fictitious character she was meant to personify for a short time. I can't seem to figure out how the participant would have been directed via the contract though. Surely it's a very dodgy way to do things and it could backfire. In my earlier days some of my i*****t s******g effects fell to pieces and I know there's quite a discussion in the Café about believability and the emotional connection with it all. I don't know if the performer made this up on their own or has taken the bones of the effect from a magic publication, which I would love to get my hands on. Would anyone here know what book something like this would be in? The reason I ask is I would love to develop this and segue into a different approach. Even if I could get the wording of the 'contract' it would be great and I could go from there. Any help you guys can give would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance! Chris

Hey Chris. I'll give ya the short version before the others chime in: We don't reveal methods here in penny, due to it being searchable through google. When you have 50 legitimate posts you can pop downstairs and say hello, where we're more willing to discuss methods.
Also, being that is your first post why don't you introduce yourself? People round here tend to like introductions and the like, instead of just "hey how is this done". |

Chris, do you're all the name of the performer?
If not, you can probably get it from the venue where you saw the performance. Once you have that, call up or write him and ask him directly. Tony |

@ Chaz93. Thanks for the reply. I may have came across a little bit too inquisitive about the method when I was typing my post. I am well aware how easy it is to discover the Café on Google and know how damaging that can sometimes be to our work. To tell you a little about myself: I've been performing around Ireland for 11 years. Starting when I was 17. I'm now 28. Although magic was my first love I do a lot more hypnotism these days, but like to integrate a little bit of jiggery pokery into my act when given the chance. In the past I've consulted for some RTE shows and was shortlisted for my own BBC production - which unfortunately fell by the wayside due to political issues. As lightly mentioned in my post I think I've sussed out the method, having broken down every component. I know - in theory - how the effect works. What I would love to discover is if the routine I described above has ever been mentioned in any magic book publications/journals, or if anyone in the forum would know authors who have discussed something to this. Just for those reading the thread now, I'm not asking "Hey guys, c'mere, how's this done please?" but "Is anyone aware of reading something like this before. Could you please point me to a good book which would have something detailed inside".
@Tony. Thanks for the reply. I spoke to the performer straight after the show. After enquiring about the routine he told me I was 'spot on' with the technical workings but failed to tell me the source. I'm thinking he could have developed the routine himself. That said I'd imagine he would have had to get inspiration for the i******t s*******g and was curious if any books detailed something of that nature. I've never read any that use a 'contract'. Thanks again. C

It sounds like an interesting routine.
I'm sorry, I don't use that principle and my knowledge of readings on it are limited to the standard sources. Tony |

Any video link?
I only can help you if I watch a video! It's because I'm a modern entertainer! Anyway according what you wrote I think he uses a expanded shell spirit bell !

Chris, thanks for the introduction, it's good to meet ya. I think you'll be fine here, I was just giving the stock answer before the vitriolic responses started rolling in. Unfortunately I'm not aware of any sources for this effect, all I can say is the signing of a contract seems to hint at method, as you've already noted.

Are you sure she only signed it? No tick boxes, no fill in the blanks?
Even without writing you could do it, but just make it less of an ins**** st**** effect by giving choices in the contract.

There's another method that springs straight to mind that doens't involve an IS. IS certainly isn't the method that I'd choose if I was going to do this.
