Not sure where to put this, but does anyone know of a lecture or dvd about just plain imptoving who you are as an entertainer? Not midirection, or staging, blocking, how to structure routines, or ahowmanship. But just, you. How to improve YOU. And how to get people to instantly connect with you etc.... Maybe aome Tony Robins dvds? Haha

There is a classic (and cheap!) book called Magic and Showmanship that is a great read. Have you ever taken acting classes? Maybe look for acting lectures, or join Toastmasters and give speeches. Get (more) comfortable being in front of a group. I don't think "being a better magician" is the thing to focus on here. That will come if you're a better worker of crowds.
I also study performers I want to emulate. I look for people who have a more advanced version of "my" style. (Do you know what your style is, who you are as a performer? That's not a dumb question, and it might not have an easy answer.) For me, I'm not a flourisher. I like to do things slowly, and maybe even "badly," and have impossible things happen anyway. So I've studied the performances of Bill Wisch, and (not a magician but amazing in this regard) Avner the Eccentric. |

I'd definitely recommend Ken Weber's Maximum Entertainment.

I would strongly suggest "The Five Points of Magic" by Tamariz.

I'm actually going to be doing the PenguinLIVE lecture next week and in my lecture I discuss not only effects but also a section dedicated to: - engaging and building rapport with your guests - making yourself likable to complete strangers - how to win them over and make your magic more appreciated - creating your own fan base in your local market The lecture is going to be live and is only $25 for 2-3 hours! Hope you get a chance to check it out : ) All the best, Michael Eaton |

There is undoubtedly a great deal of advice already given, I'd like offer a possible additional resource for becoming a better performer. Some real world advice is available in the book: Easy Street: a Guide for Players in Improvised Interactive Environmental Performance by Ann-Elizabeth Shapera. Its only $10.88 on Lulu.
She is a fantastic performer and knows how to engage a crowd. Her real world experiences are offered up in the manuscript. Read the description and the reviews and see if it may add to desire to be a better performer. Sometimes amazing advice comes from the most unusual sources. Good luck with your pursuit. http://www.lulu.com/shop/ann-elizabeth-s......342.html |
