I would like to know if there are any ideas on how to practice the first linking (in the "demonstration") when there is no one to work with?

Sure. Kneel on the floor. Place the solid single ring between your thighs. Hold it tight (and get a free ThighMaster workout in the process!). Then do the link. Hope that helps. Great routine from Mr. Haydn.

I put the solid ring between the cushions of a sofa so that it replicates the centering action during the crash link move.
