I just realized tomorrow marks 40 years since my first public performance. I have a 10-second clip from 8mm home movie but couldn't figure how to post it here. It was a freebie at our town's centennial celebration. October this year will mark 40 years since my first paid gig.
And tomorrow, if my parents are up to the trip, I am meeting the three other guys at a music festival the four of us founded 36 years ago. It was on my parents' land that we had the first one, so it will be quite a day of hugs for them too. Is that groovy or what? |

Thanks everyone. It was a cool day. Had a couple of impromptu jams with "The Founders" as we are now called. Two of the other guys have become accomplished multi-instrumentalists so we switched off a lot on playing different things. We had a group jam with almost everyone there with an instrument. That was something: Banjos, Dobros, Mandolins, Guitars of both 6 and 12 cylinders, bass players, a bongo/congo drummer... no fiddle though.
Michael, it's the northwestern mountains of Pennsyltucky. Appalachia that is. And now I can start putting the 40 year note on my marketing. If I'd have thought of it sooner I'd have them printed by now. |

Thanks for the info. I didn't know where you lived, so I thought I'd ask. Homespun music festivals were kind of common back then, and I knew of several when I lived down south, so I figured I would ask.
So this one has been continuous since the start? Sounds like you had a great time.

Yep, every year since 1976. My parents owned the land and I lived in the cabin where it started. When it got too big, 300+ some years, it was moved to a Federal campground. I'm no longer active in the planning and producing, "To young ones stronger", but as an "elder" I get consulted.
I missed only two: last year my dad had his first stroke the day we were getting ready to go, and several years ago I was too sick to go. There are many who have been there more than 25 consecutive years, and there's been two weddings, one birth, and one death during the years. The year of the birth we had that newborn and a man aged 99 at the same time. This year, and a few others, we had four generations there together. I'm just a wee bit proud of it. |
