Does anyone know of a source for purchasing playing cards that handle more or less like modern cards, but have designs that could pass for Renaissance era? I'm asking this because I am considering doing strolling magic at a renaissance festival. I would like to use cards, but they would have to look at least somewhat passably era-appropriate, and yet be manipulable for basic sleights. Thanks.

Carkshark might have what you're looking for - either the Gypsy or Heirloom deck. I've not used either decks, but their Phoenix cards are great.

Thanks for that referral. I knew I had remembered seeing something like these cards, but I couldn't remember the name of the company. The only problem is the longer than modern length of these cards. I don't know if I can work with cards like that. I know that Renaissance era cards were long, but I was hoping to find a modern size deck that looks old. That won't pass muster with anyone really in the know, but it should fly by most average audiences.

Actually, I realize now that I only saw the Gypsy deck -- I looked at the CardShark site again and saw the Heirloom Deck, which IS poker sized! Even though this deck is from the early 1800's it will pass for my needs. This seems to be what I was looking for. Thanks Sam!

James...you may want to look into the Emerson and West packet effect, "The Gypsy's Curse". It uses cards that fit the style you are looking for and is quite entertaining. I have a slightly different handling for the trick as the instructions included are a bit choppy and hard to follow (at least they were to me ).I wil share my handling if you decide to pursue the effect.

Thanks Rocky, but my needs exceed a single packet trick. I need a full deck in order to perform my regular card routines -- but with old-era looking cards.

Did they have cards during this time?
