I know that a lot of people love this book, but am I alone in thinking that the majority of the effects contained therein are mental magic (i.e. clearly tricks but with a mental theme) rather than mentalism? While there is some wonderful thinking, there are very few of the effects themselves that I feel that I could use for pure mentalism purposes without some pretty major changes.

I would agree, but also say that there is very little material out there that can be used in performing mentalism without customizing the material a lot.
I think the best stuff in this book is the souped-up versions of old effects or the brilliant use of svengali and stripper decks. /bamba |

I saw Barrie at a lecture a while back, and I'd have to agree with your opinions. Some great ideas though, but he demonstrated but didn't tip, his Any card at any number - rotter!

I agree and would even say some things aren't even mental magic - just magic. On the other hand some things are definitely mentalism.
I was fascinated by Pencil Pusher from the very first second I read about it, and had a chance to try it out just some days ago for some fellow magicians. Ho-ho-ho - some of them were very impressed from my powers in hypnosis. What a beauty! /Matias |

At first look, I have the same point of wiew....but my friend Michel Asselin convinced me to read it again ...but this time read between the lines...
And he was right. There were some great ideas in this book more than just mental-magic... Humbly my opinion... kuffs |

I think theatre of the mind is a little misleading as a title as it is easily assumed to be a book entirely on the mind which it isn't.. Producing a glass of water from a sleeve is not theatre of the mind HOWEVER....! the book does contain many twists and new angles on previous works and some of Mr Richardsons new ideas.. It is well worth reading and reading again, obviously not all of the material is going to be of use but just put a post it note by the effects that interest you first time round then re read the ideas and thinking of those effects.. but most importantly of all remember that what you see as good magic / mentalism is not always the same as the people that you are performing for... If in doubt TRY it out....
All the best M.S.
It's not goodbye, just see you later...
