I want to start out by saying, I don't do ACAAN, due to the fact that I have been a sleight of hand artist for many years and this plot typically bores me.
With that said, I recently read a very interesting ACAAN called Natural Scam.....the beauty of this effect, its so ANTI sleight of hand, it can only and truley be some sort of mental wizardery (in the eyes of the participants). When I first read the description, I thought to myself "bull sh*t".....however, its close to legitimate....very close. The effect reads/plays like this: Spectator thinks of any number and picks a random card from a borrowed and shuffled deck. She (the participant) tells you neither the card nor the number....however, when she deals through the deck, her card is @ her number.....but heres the kicker....you NEVER have to touch the cards! Ok, so whats the rub.....well, it has a bit of procedure to the effect. Nothing hard, no crazy memory work, no sleight of hand (you never touch the cards)....but for my general crowd (bar) there is a few too many "steps". Long story short, great effect and I have been carrying a deck of cards around all the sudden (again) but Im not doing card tricks....im doing this little card miracle. Natural Scam. Billy p.s. I don't have a horse in this race just a good effect in the right place but any time. |

is this the holy grail? Why do so many consider ACAAN to be the "holy grail?" I mean, it's a cool enough idea but why the holy grail? Is there a history to this? I imagine that it depends on your style, but for me a perfect question answering act would be the holy grail. That's more satisfying (IMO only) anyways, because then it's about polishing and mastering something until it (you?) becomes the grail, rather than the grail you learn from an ebook. Still, it's a cool concept. I'd be interested for a review from someone who does a lot of ACAAN routines.

Cuz someone said it was the Holy Grail and so a bunch of people believed it and then a cult formed.

Im not sure that any ACAAN is the holy grail, however there might be a holy grail of ACAAN? I don't often perform ACAAN due to the fact that I have "ability" or chops with a deck of cards, this cant really be hidden very well (imo), so I don't bother with it. With that said, an effect where I can take a deck of cards out of my pocket, hand it to a participant, and not touch them again....that helps alot. Holy grail...let me think, nah.

Just a guess on the “Holy Grail” question. So much of what we do requires setup: a certain handling, counting the cards two or three (or more) times, conditioning the spectators, multiple redirects, or some kind of verbal judo. Some have asked, wouldn’t it be great to just slap a card face down onto a table, point to a random guest and have them name any card, and they called out the right card, 100% of the time. No fuss, no muss.
THAT is my guess. What could be cleaner? I have something I’m rather proud of, regular cards, entirely hands off, two complete strangers, they do all the dealing and counting, the deck stays in their hands. One names the card the other names the number. Fast, clean, and impossible looking. But it’s also got such a convoluted “back office” that I can’t do it anywhere other than in the middle of a running show. If I could do that same effect, but with no baggage whatsoever, I might be very tempted to call it Holy (something-or-other).
...what if I could read your mind?

I purchased this and it is a good effect. It definitely is not the holy grail but the fact that you do not touch the cards is a big plus in my book. I have not performed this yet so I really do not know how this will play. But I like to have a number of effects that I can perform with a borrowed deck that is untouched and this fits that category. As for the price, at first blush it seems high. However, the bottom line is if I use an effect that I buy than almost any price is a bargain. If I never perform an effect I purchase, almost any price is expensive.

Hey guys, just wondering, as a mentalist or mind reader, how do you justify an ACAAN? Is it co-incidence? Or do you have the power to move a card through the deck to any position?
Its not influence since the deck is shuffled and you don't know the position of any card. Its definitely not mind reading or clairvoyance. Then what is it? |

Agree that for a Mentalist shuffling makes little or no sense
