Anyone dress up a standard effect by steampunking it? It's quite 'hot' in these parts. I'm thinking anything box-like - Production boxes, head twister, arm slicer, anything that the items can be glued to.

Eldon and Bernie, thanks for the links. Good thread even tho it was 4 years ago! Bernie, the 'punking' of the dollhouse would fit into my routine.

Avoid just slapping on gears and calling it steampunk. If you add gears to an arm slicer, make them look like they do something, actually turning if possible. Have "steam" coming out of things. Use lots of brass props.

My newest illusion has a steampunk'ish look to it. It's a fun style!

One of my favorite tricks is coin squeeze. It feels steamy to me.
I would never sneer at a beginning steampunker who just bought some goggles and glued on gears. We all have to start somewhere. I would sneer at businesses who would exploit steam by gluing gears on everything. And I would not avoid adding gears just because "everyone does that." |
