Hello Guys & Girls!
Over the past several years I've approached this project and as life tends to do- I got side-tracked and had to push it aside. Finally after many years of wanting to do it, I am breaking ground on my Modern Art build! I will be blogging about the entire proccess to hopefully help others who are looking to build one as well. (It will be password protected blog to help protect the secrets an I will post a link as the project unfolds). Tonight, I started making the cardboard mock-up to double-check all the measurements. Many of the measurements from the book had to be changed since I stand 6 ft tall and weigh 186 lbs. Upon finishing the cuts, I realized everything looks incredibly small- eventhough I increased the size by 1.5" all the way around. Im curious to hear from those who have built this as to changes you've made to the initial masurements to accomidate your difference in size. I know Jim's book contains a handful of "errors" in the blueprints. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated! My incredibly small cardboard mock-up: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f369/g......0001.jpg Off to make corrections and cut more cardboard!!! ~Bryan |

I am bigger than you and used a Zig Zag position inside, but for the most part I added 4 inches to his major dimmentions, for the leggs I made mine 1 inch thicker, not sure if I made it taller because of the position of person inside.

Read this entire thread and you will be a little ahead of the errors in the book.

There are not more than a couple of minor problems with the dimensions in the book. They may have been corrected in the new edition. Best I can remember, it has to do with the individual dimensions not adding up to the totals shown on adjacent drawings. For example, if the individual dimensions are 10", 20", and 5", the total dimension might say 34" instead of 35". Just verify all of these before you start cutting.

Excellent...Thanks Clinton. Ive read several threads where you've chimed in about your Modern Art. Im curious as to how much bigger you had to go on the dimensions to accommodate a taller assistant or yourself. I appreciate illusionman2's contributions; however, his differs from the book so I feel like its a bit different than what Im looking to do.

I built mine to the (corrected and verified) dimensions in the book. I saw no reason to modify them, because I didn't have a specific "assistant" in mind. I just built it to see if I could. It was a very enjoyable project. Originally I used drawer slides to connect the top and bottom pieces, but I later modified it per advice from Thomas Wayne.
If I can find a photo, I will try to post it here.

I built 2 per the book never found the errors, but the box is made for a slim girl (I could not even get through the door).I still think you should try the + 4 inches - others that used the modern art position have. I think the important thing is to keep it in perportion, if you add say 3 inches add it everwhere.

If you have the original edition of the book, just verify the vertical dimensions on drawings 3, 4, 5, and 6. In my book, they don't all add up to the same totals.
