No, I get the ultimate method. It's just the description is incredibly hard to follow. Cut this, put a pin in there, the back of this becomes the back of that etc... I cannot compute

Is the box the same in size and appearance as on the DVD? The image on the site is obscured by the cartoon devil and is less than helpful. Photos showing the craftsmanship and with a known object so we could see the scale would be wonderful. The box on the DVD looked beautiful. Tony |

Hi Tony.
Yes, the box is exactly like the one I used on the DVDs. The changes made are internal. You can see the box on our website in the combo offer. It's here: http://osterlindmysteries.com/store/inde......ts_id=68 Thanks. Richard |

I've had mine for several days and have spent this time looking at it, poking it and thinking about it. I've read PME several times and EACH time I look at the section dealing with this box and thought -- "that would be very cool to have." But my skills as a craftsman are less impressive than my skills as a brain surgeon.
Pros: this is a beautifully made box. The mechanism works seamlessly and -- when used as Richard suggests in his DVD and in the illustration in the manual -- it's fairly easy to get your pe*k. To all appearances, the spectator writes something on a card, drops it into a closed box and you instantly know what was written. Cons: this is absolutely not examinable. It can't leave your hands. This is a simple matter of audience management -- and I see no real problems. When the box (okay...MY box anyway) is opened and ready to receive the spectator's card, it must be tilted forward, toward the spectator. When I first showed this to my wife, she saw the se*m right away. When I offered it to her tilted slightly forward, she could see nothing. I didn't like the grooves cut into the back of the box as they seem to scream "LOOK HERE!" I would have preferred a small place to put a little pressure to activate the YKW. But you know something? Those grooves make it very simple to activate the YKW and the audiences never sees the back of the box anyway. So this wasn't an issue. Initially I was concerned that the instructions tell the spectator to throw the card in face down. I'd much rather that they just tossed the card in any way they want to. I want there to be no restrictions on this. But those familiar with the workings of this device know that a face up card could present a few problems. It doesn't. Not at all. You simply move the you-know-what very slowly and you can see the topside. The closing of the "YKW" (you-know-what) is virtually soundless. The other initial problem I had with the device was ensuring that the card flipped back the its initial face down position. There is a tiny vacuum that is created between the card and the bottom of the box and there's no explaining why the card that WAS face down is suddenly stuck to the side wall. This, too, was easily resolved -- by simply tilting the box forward -- toward your spectator before they open it. There are some wonderful Q and A options covered by Richard in the manual. I don't want to give anything away, but suffice it to say that whatever is inside the apparently closed box can either be known to the performer or stolen by him. This is a true utility item. The uses are limited only by your imagination. I really REALLY like that. I don't see a close-up application for this unless the audience is on the other side of the table from you...or you're using it on stage. But I DO see many wonderful ways it can be used. The box will accommodate most props -- giving it a logical reason to be there: tarot cards, a deck of cards, a small crystal etc. The craftsmanship is superb. I expect that, with proper care, this prop will give a lifetime of service. The long and short of it is that the things I thought were problems actually aren't problems at all. They are all intended to give this device a smooth operation. I haven't quite decided how I'm going to use it yet...as in "I haven't designed a routine." But I there's enough leeway in the design of this device -- so many potential applications -- that I'm very much looking forward to working on it. As I look at it something occurs to me. The seed of a routine maybe. Here's the thought: it's true that you can pe*k at a card or steal things out of this box. But you can sneak things INTO it as well. Interesting possibilities, huh? David

David,
Thanks---that is really helpful. I just got this yesterday and your thoughts are a huge help. My first reaction was similar to yours. My biggest concern was the back as you mentioned but it should be scripted to simply make that a non issue. Again thanks for your thoughts. |

I appreciate the input and praise of the box from everyone.
We tried to stay as close as possible to the original design while making the box workable. Since the units we are selling are exactly like I used on the DVD, I figured that anyone interested can see what the box looks like and how it works from watching that DVD. Ray understands what is important and when he redesigned the box he showed me how he added the felt not only to reduce noise, but also to hold the flap open just a trifle. If you look into the box you are less likely to see a seam than if you pushed it in all the way. But again, we are splitting hairs here that really don't occur in actual performance if the apparatus is handled in the right way. Richard |

I understand what you mean about the groves (I call'em divots) on the back but I think they look okay and have to be better than the nail that sticks out that Annemann suggested in Jinx.

That should have been grooves, not groves. And I still call them divots.
