I was wondering which other books you all read after 13 Steps? Is there a natural progression... Like a book that is highly sought after once one finishes reading through/practicing the principles in 13 Steps? I have become much more interested in mentalism because it's so utterly impossible when done well and presented correctly.

No, but with magic spectators usually have somewhere to look to try to figure out an effect. Now, most effects can disprove any of those thoughts if they are well constructed. No matter how slowly I move while performing magic, spectators will at times say the hand is quicker than the eye, fast hands, etc. with mentalism that's done directly and is well constructed the spectator has no where to go. Just my opinion.

I don't think there is a progression, but most people would say Practical Mental Effects (Annemann) is a basic text. After that there are wonderful books by Bob Cassidy, Max Maven (Phil Goldstein), Larry Becker, Barrie Richardson, T.A. Waters and Chuck Hickok that will give you enough material to use for the rest of your life.

Or you could blaze a trail of unique effects that no one else could think of .. Only You, from your individual perspective. That would be cool ... Thirteen Steps could be used as a catalyst to provoke deep thinking ... or you could just buy Annemann ...
I would say MMM by Waters is my favorite.

TwistedAce, I agree with you - mentalism is often indecipherable if it is performed correctly. And to the other posters, yes, I generally agree with the above advice.
I think you could do worse than studying the basic texts, but in my opinion, after 13 steps the PS series and Maven are the texts that will best develop your thinking, especially if you already have a good background in performance. I would also suggest that you have a look at the 'Psychological Mentalism' thread that is going right now as well. There are a lot of texts listed there that will help enhance your abilities as a Mentalist and will serve to create more realistic effects. If you are just looking for effects, those standard texts are great. If you are looking to develop beyond that, I'd suggest starting with the PS series, or maybe even the NM series. |

Highly recommend the Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy. Not a beginner's book, but one of the most valuable and practical resources out there on building an act and taking it to the next level.

I've been pulling apart my house looking for my copy of Barrie Richardson's Theater of the Mind. I dismissed it years ago because there wasn't enough magic in it. Now, I'm so upset that I can't find it. I have PRISM and have been looking through that as well.
