I'm surprised to see you guys mix what I view as two different levels of "knowledge". Not saying you're wrong in doing so (not saying you're right either ;-) but I'm surprised.
I agree we should know what our character can achieve, in order to keep it consistent. Being the creators of our character, we can (and I believe we should) know precisely what's going on, why it's going on, how, how it's called etc. That's the first level. The second level is that of our character. Does he (or she) knows as much as the creator? Not necessarily! We can all drive, but how many of us can explain how an engine works? We can all breathe, but how many of us can explain what happens in the lungs, why and how it works? If your character is to mentalism what mechanics or physicians are to engines or the human body, fine! But even in that case, do they really need to explain everything? (If you answer that _your_character_ does, that's fine too). But should the audience be explained everything that's going on? It's a good idea to give them hints, but I believe they should have the freedom to find their own explanations. In my opinion, that leaves more room to mystery and astonishment (and to what your character can do : if he/she's a NLP expert, he/she can't use PK, forecast random events, etc.) Another eason why I like that approch, is I see people can relate to it and feel involved. If I sort of "woke up one morning" with special abilities, why couldn't they have the same? Can Usain Bolt explain why he runs faster than anybody ensle on Earth? Probably not, but he can prove it. Can I explain why I can read minds, predict some events, cause concincidences or bend forks? My character is not sure, event though his creator is ;-) If you want your charachter, and the audience, to know as much as the "creator" does, if that suits you, it's fine. My point is, it's not compulsory. And that we should pay attention and make a difference between what we know about our character, what he/she know about him/herself, and what he/she tells the audience.

Thanks all very much for some great insight for my question. I like that it's not necessary to explain workings, but to hint it and keep consistent in character.

Totally concur with Bob. Any random coincidence that ends with discernable correlation becomes Carl Jung's term 'Synchronicity'. The very foundation of I Ching. A sort of scientific blending of probability & mystical conjecture. A gray area of believable situations & events that all people have experienced 1st hand in their lives & can fully relate too.
"Synchronicity is God's way of staying anonymous," is an utterly brilliant line imo. |
