I know there are other threads about this in other sections of this forum but I just wanted to post this in the "New to Magic" section to draw the attention of any newbie magicians out there who haven't yet encountered it to this terrific method.
I first came across The Epitome Location last year when I acquired Harry Lorayne's Classic Collection Vol 1 (although it was first published in 1976 according to HL's intro). I skim-read it the first time without completely taking it in, thinking, "This looks complicated. Oh I'll come back to it when I feel ready to devote some time to it." I then went on to read the rest of Vol 1 and the other two volumes of the Classic Collection, selecting effects to learn and weave together into small routines suitable for a hobbyist like myself. Then, a couple of days ago, I revisited Volume 1, ostensibly to revise a move in another trick (which I thought I already knew - what a mistake! But that's another story). Anyway, the book fell open at the Epitome Location page and I just distractedly started reading. Within an hour I had performed a pretty straightforward routine using the basic method with a spectator-shuffled deck to my daughter and her boyfriend and completely floored them. I have to add that my mental arithmetic is pretty sound having been a professionally qualified accountant for about 35 years so the technique came very easily to me. But it struck me that if you know your basic number bonds fairly instinctively then, if you haven't already done so, you really should acquire and learn the Epitome Location. Since I started studying card magic last year I have by no means been able to read or view every tutorial book or DVD out there and of course I see other publications etc being praised on here all the time which I am sure are very good indeed judging by the comments. I have to say though that with Harry Lorayne's 3-volume (so far) CC complemented by his "Best Ever..." DVDs I have enough card material to keep me and my occasional "friends and family" audiences very happy indeed for a very long time. |

I don't own Lorayne's Classic Collection but it definitely sounds like one I'd like to obtain. Is this collection still in print? Where would I find it? I'll do some googling but since you mentioned it, I figured you'd know where to go to buy this set. Wouldn't mind the 'Best Ever...' DVDs that you mention, either.

Hey highcard: Where've you been? Go to my magic website (listed under this post with the word "magic" in it) and click on Magic Books and Magic DVDs to get all information, contents, etc. Then, to order, or to ask any questions, go to my personal email address - also listed under this post, with the word "earthlink" in it. Best - Harry L. (I'm also just about to try to copy the full-page ad for THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol. 4 here in the Books For Sale section - if I can. I'm a lousy computer person!)

I am sure he will correct me if I'm wrong but I think all the material on the DVDs is probably covered in the books. However, if I find an effect in the books that I fancy trying and it also happens to be on one of the DVDs I do find it helpful to see it actually performed and also to see Harry's visual explanation. Having said that, in my, admittedly limited, experience I have always found Harry's written explanations to be extremely well written and thought out. Some moves or subtleties can be extremely difficult to convey via the written word but Harry always seems to find the right words and put them in the right order! |

This is one of the items Harry did in his show when he was guest of honor at FFFF. Beautiful effect. It made me go home and look at my copy again.
