I am booked to do "magic" at a wedding tommarow, however I am planning on doing mentalism. I was given free reign on what and where I perform, given that its between x and y hours. I am doing mainly walk around and perhaps some work in a "booth", yet nothing on stage.
I have been considering the atmosphere of a high scale wedding and wondering if perhaps this is a poor choice, due to the fact that they hired me after seeing my close up card work. I don't think that they would dislike my mentalism (I have received very good feedback latley). My question is, have any of you performed mentalism at a wedding? Billy |

I don't mean to jump in with a "stupid mental trick" sort of post, but I recently performed Mark Strivings' WARM AND FUZZIES at a little impromptu show and it would be PERFECT for a wedding. You probably know the effect and of course I have no idea if it fits your personal approach but it could be an ideal gem for a wedding as a "compatibility test" - either between the bride and groom or any other couple. Again, apologies for jumping in with an effect suggestion when you're asking for something else but I've rarely seen an effect that could really shine at a wedding.

I would stick to straight magic at first, and if things wind down and you have some small groups just chilling at some table, then I would try a little mentalism. I don't know how long you are booked for, but wedding receptions usually start off high energy and then taper off as the folks get settled in. |

Yes, and at high scale weddings as well. You have to do what you feel most comfortable at Billy. Not all mentalisim effects will fly at a wedding, sometimes you need to be quick, which when performing mentalism, can be a challenge if you want the effect to be believable. Remember, at weddings, people are seeing other family members they may not see to often and love this time to mingle. In my experience you need to be well prepared and make sure your patter is nailed. I love using my NW, pencil, B.T and MD, even cards can go over vey well. So yes, it is possible for sure but if your not really prepared to do so, then why not just stick with what you do best.

Serves me right for writing while concentrating on something else work-related. My last sentence should have said "I've rarely seen a mental effect that could really shine at a wedding as well" - or something like that. Anyhow, I was just recommending an effect that could work well. Didn't mean to offend anyone

Mr. X,
No offence taken! I don't know the effect, but I do have many that work well with couples...er, by many I mean one or two. I havent been on the forums in awhile and its nice to see constructive advice for my first post back. In regards to starting with magic and transitioning to mentalism, I don't think I will or could do that, as its against the grain of what I am comfy with. However, its a good sugestion regarding the tempo of a wedding. I have worked many weddings doing magic, but I have grown a bit bored with it.....yet, tommarow Im sure the blood with be flowing. No offence taken Mrx but If that statement is true, then I personally feel you have not seen a true mentalist at work. I've got some fantastic follow up shows after reading peoples minds at weddings so I must be doing something right that shines
All the best, Darren

Good point, RCP I remember my wife at the wedding. And my mother in law . And Darren, I am very much still a student of the art so I'm sure I've not seen as many true mentalists at work as you have, but I have seen a few terrific pros. And one day I hope to see your work - but please, not at my wedding. One is enough for a lifetime.

Genetics works great at weddings. A nice lighthearted routine that plays well (I guess I'm biased) but there is a thread on the Café here

If you can read palms (even better if you can predict their jointly chosen card by reading both the bride and grooms palms) you'll be a smash. I've been in a bar and ended up having a drink with the happy couple that had wanted to stay up beyond the rest of the guests ( we were at the hotel for something else). I did this for them and they were telling everyone about it throughout breakfast the next day.
