My good old collapsible TOP HAT has been left open for about 3 months - for some reason it would not stay on the closed position any more -and I have a show coming up and in need of it! also it sounds rusted. Any tips on how to fix this or where can a buy a good quality TOP HAT. Not the regular standard one but of good quality. Tips on fixing current one will be ideal.
Thanks MagicJac |

http://www.nnmagic.com be prepared for a price shock.
The good ones are made in Germany. Do some searching, they are all over the place, none under $200.00. |

I don't know if you can fix it. It would probably be for the best if you could save some money and purchase a new one. As the saying goes, a magician with a broken TOP HAT is like a wizard with a broken wand.

A long time ago I had the same problem with a collapsibale top hat. It was very old and the fabric was ruined too. Therefore I was not afraid putting it apart. The mechanics had some damage - rings were broken due to decades of mechanical stress from the springs. I could fix that with some new small key rings. But I had to sew completely new fabric to the top hat. That was the most trick part.
If your collapsible top hat is old with still strong fabric you will not want to cut that fabric away. It is possible to disengage the sweat band and afterwards the inner lining at the opening. You simply cut through the threads with a seam opener. That gives you access to the mechanics of the top hat. After repair and some maintenance you can stitch everything in place again. |

Should the hat be left open when not in use or closed ???

The hat can be stored open and closed. I believe a collapsible top hat is better stored opened. Then the fabric is stretched and stays in shape and does not get broken or wrinkled. The spring mechanism is under tension in any position. So the springs should not weaken in any position.
