And this is one response I just got back. lol

I'd like to revive this thread because I'm wondering if anything has changed. I believe Leland was the only one on this thread that claims he's actually had bookings from thumbtack. Everyone says they get leads.
To me, it seems like thumbtack is just the opposite of Gigmasters. With Gigmasters you pay a fee when you book a gig. With Thumbtack you pay for the lead upfront, thumbtack could care less whether you book or not. I have had a little success with Gigmasters. However, it is not unusual for me to bid on 40 gigs before I get a booking. That's ok, its a little bit of work but it doesn't cost anything. At that rate (1 booking for every 40 bids) I may have to pay thumbtack $240 for every booking. Is it worth it? I'm thinking not. I jumped through all of Thumbtack's hoops and became a gold member (for whatever that's worth) and my bids are still not accepted. I think I'm done with Thumbtack. I'd like to hear your latest thoughts.

Not worth it in my opinion... I checked my "dashboard" on thumbtack a few weeks back only to find that some of the quotes I had given for leads had never even been viewed (!)... in fairness thumbtack did try to remedy the situation and reimburse me but the very fact that this was a significant proportion of the leads I had bid on said plenty about the type of leads they generate... in my opinion thumbtack merely provides a place for price shoppers to get cheap bids and does not benefit our industry.

I also jumped through hoops and became a Gold member and I think an "Elite" member as well. At that time there was no charge for leads, and it seemed worth the effort. However, once they started charging for leads, I just stopped responding. I get maybe a dozen "leads" per week from them, but I'm not going to spend $4 on every lead, only to find I've wasted my time. Ken, as you stated, the ultimate cost per booking would more than likely be too high. And it certainly isn't worth my time to track each of these leads and seek refunds. That alone could be a few hours per week. No thanks. So, I just stopped responding. Once in a great while, I get a lead that comes directly to me-- those are free and I respond to those.
Gigmasters, and Gigsalad are much better (though not perfect) models. I'm much happier to send out a quote and then pay a commission for an actual booked show.

I'm fairly new to the market. Thumbtack has been useful to me. I guess it depends largely on your area. And also on your level. If you're just starting out like me, and need exposure and experience, Thumbtack can be a valuable resource as it attracts people looking for a bargain. So it's good to get your business up and running with video, testimonials, photos, references, etc...

As far as I am concerned, thumbtack stinks. I can't stand the fact that I have to pay $4 just to send a quote. As mentioned earlier the cost/benefit ratio is horrible.

It bugs me too. I look forward to the day I don't need them anymore. I'm Just very strapped for cash and its only of my only options now. Hopefully as things get better and I make a bit of money, I can put it towards a more effective method of marketing and generating leads.

Welcome to the magic Café. Thumbtack is a suckers game. "Good things come to those who wait" providing that those who wait are working their butts off to make those good things happen. The post cards that you put in the mail today equals bookings six months from now. The math is simple.

Hi Al. Thanks, and I believe you're right on. They are becoming a drag already. I just emailed them and told them I won't be responding to their leads anymore. I'm gonna start doing some grassroots advertising in my immediate vicinity. I'm sick of the Thumbtack game myself. Time to Move on.

They are great if you do $100-$150 shows.

You're right sspanks. And that means adult gigs too. For kid's shows, you need to be doing $50-$75 shows I suppose, IF THAT.
I just sent TT an email: <
I was going to ask that my account be deleted, but I opted not to because I read that people can still contact me directly through my profile at no charge to me. Otherwise, with all due respect, it seems like a big waste of time and my hard earned money. Many of the leads seem to be of very low quality. I'd much prefer it if we just paid a flat fee so we can respond to as many leads as we want. This buying of credits and gambling them, is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. So I'll keep my account in case someone contacts me directly, but I won't be answering any more public leads. Thumback, for what its worth, has been useful and instrumental in getting my first few bookings and I'm grateful for that. But I can't see myself doing this long term, unless Thumbtack changes their business model. Anyway, thanks for listening to my rant. Best Regards, Wesley>> |

I just landed a gig from Thumtack. I quoted my normal price and she contacted me to hire me then I fond out that the event is for 2 birhtday kids so that will mean it will be twice the number of kids. Hd I known that my price would have been a bit higher. Oh well live and learn.

Keep in mind that thumbtack is in business to make money for thumbtack, not for you. why do you think they send each potential client info on 5 performers? They tell the client it is so they can make a better choice and to promote competition so the client gets a better price. But it's so thumbtack can get paid 5 times on each lead instead of just once or twice. and of course the practice actually forces performers into a price war. And if you think you have it bad a s a Magician, thumbtack charges DJs $7.50 for every lead that they respond to. And the only way to get your credits back is when the client never opens or looks at your quote. it does not matter if they ever respond to you in any way. If they even look at your quote, all chance for a refund is gone.

Ok, I have responded only to corporate leads, and booked an illusion show for a holiday party last month. I've probably spent $50 on leads, so this was a huge ROI. I would normally spend $300 on adwords to book the same show. In this case it was worth it for me.
