I just realized something about the dust jacket of Bruce Elliott's _Classic Secrets of Magic_. With the top hat, monocle, cape, gloves and the flourish of springing the cards--this has to be Cardini, the most classical magic act of all time! Kudos to the graphic artist who came up with the idea! Of course, Bruce probably had a hand in suggesting it!

Not nescessarily; "Cardini" wore/used his monocle in/with his right eye.

This book has had several cover designs over the years. I believe the above sample is actually the artist interpretation of what most people believe is a magician. The general public think of a magician as a person in top hat and tails. Symbolism is an easy way to catch the buyers eye, it worked for you as well.
