He won MLB's triple crown last night, a feat that hasn't been accomplished in 45 years!
For those of you who don't know, winning the triple crown is tough. A baseball player must lead the league in batting average, homeruns, and runs batted in (RBI). To do all three in a year is nearly unspeakable, but Mr. Cabrera has done it this season. Congratulations to him--he is now a shining star to finally end the dreary steroid-era baseball. |

I think he's the first player to do it since 1967. Carl "Yaz" from the Boston Red Sox was the last man to do it.

Algebraic, I believe you are correct. 45 years ago would'v been 1967, and the last time I seriuosly thought about the Triple Crown, I believe I read that it was Carl Yastrzemski, aka Yaz.
EDIT: (Althouh a Google search helped me spell that name, which kind of deafeats the purpose of remembering things |

Interesting. Who else has achieved that status?

It's a short list, here.
In addition to Miguel Cabrera and Carl Yasztremski, you'll find Frank Robinson, Mick, Ted, Joe Medwick, Jimmie, Lou, Ty, Rogers, Chuck Klein, Nap, Tip O'Neil, Paul Hines. Ted and Rogers were 2-time holders of the title. |

It's a heck of an accomplishment. I'd be surprised, but not shocked, if he didn't win the MVP.

Cool!
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I expect he'll win the MVP; it's just too rare a feat. Really unlucky for Mike Trout (assuming Cabrera wins it), because he's having an MVP season, too; he's just got the misfortune of having it concurrently with Cabrera's. Cabrera is also, by all accounts, a great guy, too. When he was signed as a first baseman (not an overly demanding defensive job, as MLB spots to) and then moved to third, a lot of players would have griped about it; Cabrera had a "Whatever's going to help the team" mentality. Nice to see him land the triple crown.

Very interesting list, Woland.
I also forgot about the pitcher's TC.....wins, strikeouts, and ERA. I had it stored in the back of my mind, but I didn't fully realize that Justin Verlander won it only one season ago! Looking at the three stats from Woland's list, it seems as though Cabrera had moderatly good stats compared to others in the modern era (I say from 1900+). It just blows my mind to read some of those stats, like how Ty Cobb had only 9 HR (which still led the league) but still 107 RBI, or that Ted Williams didn't win it the year he hit .400 (the last pro player to do so, in 1941). Great stuff, baseball is. |

Yes, and I was surprised to be reminded that Rogers Hornsby didn't make the TC the year of his best BA . . . a record which by the way still stands.

This is great Miguel and my hometown, especially after Verlander winning the Cy Young last year. Now it's time for a World Series.

Ok, I don't follow baseball at all.
Dumb question alert. Tip O'Neil? The speaker of the house? |

Tip the politician got the nickname from Tip the baseball player. Not one and the same, nor even related, I believe.

Very cool. Vlad. I might add him to my growing list of players whose card I want (although some I may never get)
