Hi All
I would be interested in your opinion of Edward Victor's Magic of the Hands Trilogy. Is this worth seeking out? Is it mainly cards, hanks, coins or all of the above? Mark |

These are among my favouite books.
I have the old set published in four parts nearly 60yrs ago. The books cover a wide range of mainly slieght-of-hand. Cards,Coins,Billiad balls,Thimbles. His rope routine is the basis of most C&R routines. A version of one of his coin routines is used in John Carneys last book. Some of the materials and concepts are a bit old fashioned and the drawings aren't up to modern standards but not only is most of the stuff still usefull, but it includes cigar and cigarette magic. Something usually ignored. I can recomend in safely, but in the republished form its a bit pricy. I don't know if the drawings have been revised. At the beginning I refered to four books. The trilogy consists of three books, one of which was in two parts. Eddie |

The Magic Of The Hands Triology was republished in 1995 by Kaufman & Greenberg, 103 pages.
Martin Joyal has a few copies in stock that sells for $28.00 or $26.00, depending if you want the book with or without dustjacket. http://www.joyalstack.com/Pages/DejaLu/DejaFrame.html A book worth your attention.

I visited the site mentioned by Peo to check it as the book being sold by Davenports and through Abra magazine is advertised as having 352 pages.
The third book in the seres, Further Magic Of The Hands, had only 103 pages. The book on Peo's site looks to have the same cover as the books as sold above, so I think its only a printing error on the site, and the book has the full triogy. I would check though, and get the dust cover. The Abra price is £29.75, but may include postage. Hope this helps. Eddie |

Oooops, sorry Eddie, my mistake.
Let me correct myself: The Magic Of The Hands Trilogy consists of all three books in one volume The Magic Of The Hands, 117 pages More Magic Of The Hands, 132 pages Further Magic Of The Hands, 130 pages sums up to a total of 379 pages Once again I stand corrected

Just a word of caution. Do not confuse the books in the trilogy, Magic of the Hands, More Magic of the Hands, and Further Magic of the Hands by Edward Victor, with the book, The Magic of Edward Victor's Hands. The latter was authored by Rae Hammond and published by Richard Kaufman. It contains Edward Victor material that was published in a variety of magazines over the years, and other material not published in the trilogy, plus biographical material. It is a super book - but should not be mistaken for the trilogy.

Both books (or all four, as the case may be) are well worth your attention. While the material is older it still holds up beautifully. Interestingly, Dai Vernon's work was heavily influenced by Victor (can you say Spellbound?).
On a side note, it is refreshing to me to see so many posts and topics lately where you guys (even some youngsters) are excited about and advocating many of the classic texts as opposed to just what's new and novel. "Novel" is OK until it's not novel anymore, but "classic" lasts a long time! It gives me great hope for the future of magic!

I agree with Scott, and want to add that, for some of us, it's a matter of finally having the disposable income to be able to afford the $85 - $150 required for these classic texts

Understood. However, I picked up the tilogy in softcover, used, for about $8 on Ebay, and the Hammond sequel for $20 new at a dealer's table at a convention.
