I wanted to produce a dove a while back and had an old rubber one that I picked up for 50 cents at a magic swap. I cut the head off and got some loose feathers for my new "dove tip". When I was ready I pulled a silk out, and draped it over my hand and it took shape and the head apeared and feathers fell down. I put the squirming dove into a large paper coffee cup and turned it upside down, then shook out the silk, showing both sides, and pocketed it. I snapped my fingers pushed the cup flat and showed it empty. OK my effect is a little weak.....
Are there any effects like this in print? I recall Harry Murphy mentioning somthing similar, but it wouldn't come up in a search.

I don’t think that the effect is all that weak; in fact I believe that your idea has some merit as a “shocking” and funny bit. Work on it and get your timing down and I think that it will work.
The routine I mentioned was that of Billy McComb. He apparently produces a dove from behind a hank, feathers fall from behind the hank before the dove is revealed. There is much movement of the dove before the hank is removed. The hank is whisked away and the dove is revealed. Its head bobs about and then Billy folds it up and puts it into his jacket pocket revealing it to be a rubber dove. In his hands it is pure comedy! The routine is on a video he did for Stevens Magic. Zoltan the Adequate (Andy Blau) a fantastic Renaissance Fair “magician” from Toronto does a routine somewhat similar to the one you are thinking of. He puts a hank over his hand, suddenly a bird head shape is seen, it moves about (under the hank, some feathers fall from the hank. Zoltan reaches his other hand under the hank and then pulls the hank away with his teeth and we see that Zoltan has cupped a dove between his two hands, the dove head moves about as if the bird is struggling to get away. Finally Zoltan opens his hands and we see that it was simply a rubber bird’s head on his thumb. It gets the laughs. Zoltan’s web site is at: http://www.justadequate.com/zoltan.htm Otherwise, I think that your idea is origional to you.

You are right. Timing is my problem. I will keep working on it. I thought it would be cool to have some livestock that you didn't have to take care of. It did impress some of the neighborhood kids but I never did it for a paying audience. The smashing cup thing is a little morbid. Maby I can come up with something a little more PC.
Thanks Harry, BTW the dagger chest has a good deep coat of oil and some new gaffers cloth. I have some brass latches to put on so it can break down easy and flat, but havent installed em yet. Used it in a couple shows before the move.

You can vanish the rubber dove with a silk and flash paper, then switch it for the "Cooked" dove. Makes it look like you flash fried it.
