OK. So I may be a bit behind the times when it comes to the latest hitech gadget but it seems that they bring something new out every day.
Basically I would like to know if anyone is using an ipod to play their music at their kids shows for party games, those that do the full parties. Do you have much success with it or is there loss of sound quality when you feed it through your PA. Also what are you using remote wise. I have looked through the magic Café and a lot of the threads on here are a bit old on the subject. I see that they have brought out another Ipod - 7th Generation, they may have even brought out another one by the time I have typed this !!!. Any help would be appreciated. Would an Ipad be better ? It would not be required for any special sound effects or anything like that just music for the party games and being able to remotely switch it on and pause for things like pass the parcel for example, go to the next track etc Many Thanks. Although it's rare I use it, I use the same as Rodney with a Happy Amp. In most any house or small venue it gives plenty of sound.
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.

Most ipod remotes will work with iPhones, though obviously the docking connectors have to match

For small parties to medium events (200-300 people), I use my VSM iCue2 SoundBox PA with my iPod.

REVIEWS From MUM Magazine September 2012 (official publication of the Society of American Magicians): Cue the Sound Carl Andrews is not only a designer and programmer of iDevice apps, he is also a working professional magician. When his friend, Shawn Popp, suggested that he create an app to play music cues, he went at it with passion. The result is the most professional program I have ever seen called ShowCues. Using your iPhone or even better, iPad, your device becomes a music cue machine that you plug into your sound system. Load all your music on the device (through iTunes) and you can create a multitude of playlists for each of your shows. The screen will display a timer, name of song, time left on the song, what the next song is, and other important things. There are so many features to this app, I won't have enough time to go through them all. Start the music and a countdown timer will show you how much time is left in the song. A cue sheet comes up to tell you or the sound guy something such as: "cut the music when the dove disappears" or "the force card is the 5 of clubs." It can also tell you what the next song is. The other great feature is the ability to plug in a mini wireless remote control (sold separately) that fits in the palm of your hand. No more relying on someone else to get the cues correctly! Wonderfully written manual and a professional thought out program makes this a must for all performers. Even buying an iPad along with this program and remote will be cheaper than buying a machine that costs over $1000. The bonus: this does it easier! Do yourself a favor and check out all that this app has to offer. You can read about the features on their website: http://mojosoftwareonline.com/showcues . "It's a well designed piece of kit for the working pro. For me and hundreds of others out in the 'trenches' gigging for a living, it's fantastic! I handed my iPad to the sound engineer to run my cues - which he did, superbly. He LOVED this app - quote 'I'm having that!' A well thought out and easy to use app. " — Gary Dunn, Scotland's Premier Family Entertainer "Never deal with a ship's sound tech again! Double the price Carl! Seriously, having spent $1800 on another sound device, it astounds me what a great job you have done thinking out this App. Congratulations." — Nick Lewin — Cruise Ship Entertainer "I'll be using it at the Magic Castle the rest of the week. It's fantastic!" — Dave Cox — Professional Magician "Great app! Love it! wow this should be a app for every professional entertainer. If I ever get to meet you in person a most definite hug is in order a kiss on the cheek if your French." — Oscar Munoz — award winning illusionist and humorist "Fantastic Carl! Finally, won't have to carry the extra gear. Thanks for the reasonable price too!" — Chris Blackmore — Professional Magician "The ONLY App I need to run my entire show from. Perfect for ventriloquists, magicians, speakers - anybody who wants to run an entire show from an iPad or iPhone! By far THE BEST app on the market." — Paul Romhany — Product Reviewer from Vanish Magic Magazine "I purchased Show Cues for my iPhone 4 and it is fantastic. This is exactly what I've been hoping and looking for. I'm am so thankful" — Santa Steve Gillham "You have a real winner for those who choose to see the benefits, the cost is way to minimal!" — Brent Gregory — Professional Hypnotist "Carl has designed the BEST, SIMPLEST sound cue device ever! We use it to run ALL our sound needs, at the theatre and beyond. I LOVE the fact that you don't need to be near a sound board, tech booth, or tech person! — Joe Givan - FISM winner, Theatre Owner / Operator "Show Cues is one of the greatest apps for the stand-up entertainer in existence. It does everything you need. Say goodbye to the $1000-plus sound cueing hardware. Fabulous support and customer service, which triples the value in my book. I can't wait for the next upgrade, which will allow me to pre-set separate volume controls for each track. The best keeps getting better." — Dan Garrett — Mentalist – Magician – Speaker – Humorist "I gotta say this is without question the best software option for playing music hands down. It's beyond great. I have had every system you can think of, including the mp3 tech and this blows them all away, ESP with these new updates. I'm not sure what else you plan on doing to improve this, but it's phenomenal. Well done!" — Michael Bourada |

I use my I-Pod click-wheel (about six years old) version, and it works great.
My main suggestion for getting the best audio quality is to convert the songs you're going to use in your to show to AIFF format. You can (easily) do this in ITunes before you sync them to your IPod. You should really notice a difference in quality, assuming you're using a decent quality sound system to play them on. It's helpful to know that of the various music formats out there, MP3 is the worst quality format to use, that AAC is better, and that AIFF is best. WAV, which is for Windows, I'm told is somewhere in the middle of that range. |

I use an Ipod Video (5th generation) with an iJet Nav remote. One thing I've done is put Rockbox (www.rockbox.org) on it, essentially replacing the operating system. It works well and gives me all the options I need.
